“Shame on you for making your mum feel like that”
There is usually a universal understanding that teens don’t want their parents embarrassing them in front of their school friends.
But one young woman has received a backlash online after sharing a message exchange with her mum on her birthday – and proving herself to be a bit ‘ungrateful’.
As her mum explained in the text message, she had arranged for a Snapchat filter to be set up around 17-year-old Jenna’s school so she and her friends could alter their photographs.
The filter, which anyone at the location could use, puts a sort of stamp across the bottom of pictures which reads “Jenna’s 17th Birthday. 03.30.17.”

Jenna replied: “Why would you do that?” and her mum responded to ask if she was mad, saying: “Sheesh, thought you would like it. I guess I just can’t do anything right. Whatever.”
This led to people being a bit angry with Jenna over how she responded to her mum, with one saying she should be ashamed for making her mother feel like that.
@jfluege Wow she went out of her way to do something thoughtful? What a terrible mother! (mom, please adopt us Twitter folk we’ll cherish you)

@jfluege @nikbuh_ You couldn’t have just said that to your mother…?

Others started texting their own mums to let them know how much they mean.

Jenna was then forced to defend herself after the backlash, writing a note on her phone and posting a screengrab of it to Twitter.

She wrote: “For anyone who’s wondering I obviously thanked my mom for it and it was very thoughtful but I didn’t want that attention from my whole school.
“People will talk about it either way, if I wanted the Snapchat filter I was full of myself if I didn’t want it I was ungrateful.
“You can’t please everyone.”
Her tweet received over 5,000 retweets and 25,000 likes, as well as hundreds of replies slamming her for her response.
Hopefully her mum didn’t take it too badly when she got home…
