Is the annual Miss Tatarstan beauty pageant, which took place in Karzan, Russia, on Monday, the craziest beauty pageant in the world?
At first glance, one may think so.
While Miss Universe, Miss America, and other beauty pageants require their contestants to don bathing suits — which, admittedly, some find crazy in and of itself — Miss Tatarstan takes it a massive step further with a competitive round in which contestants model a variety of caged headpieces that looked like they were designed to look like planetary orbits … or bondage accessories.
Keeping with the space theme, contestants even wore black dresses with balls that could be planets attached and suspended around them.
Dozens of women competed, and Zulfia Sharafeyeva won the crown in a navy blue evening dress. Sharafeyeva will be expected to represent the Russian republic of Tatarstan in country and international pageants.
The Miss Tatarstan website stresses that this contest is not about outer beauty alone: “Grace, intelligence, charisma — all these qualities are needed to become a member of ‘Miss Tatarstan.’”
But Miss Tatarstan is far from the weirdest beauty pageant in the world.
