Stunning photo reveals the eye of Hurricane Dorian

This is what it looks like in the eye of the storm.

A stunning photo posted Sunday afternoon on Twitter shows the sun shining in a clear blue sky over powerful Hurricane Dorian as a US Air Force plane flies through the calm center of the chaos.

A fluffy, brilliant white cloud stretches in a semi-circle across the bottom of the spectacular image, which also shows a six-bladed propeller engine near the lower left-hand corner.

“The eye of #Dorian,” tweeted Garret Black, whose profile describes him as a “Meteorologist” and “Air Force Hurricane Hunter.”

The website for the Air Force Reserve’s 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, based out of the Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi, identifies Black as a first lieutenant and aerial reconnaissance weather officer.

The “Hurricane Hunters” fly massive Super Hercules aircraft into storms to gather data — including temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity and surface pressure — that’s used to prepare forecasts by the National Hurricane Center.

Earlier Sunday, videos showed Dorian slamming into the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas as a Category 5 hurricane with 220 mph wind gusts and storm surges of up to 23 feet.
