\u201cHow I Met Your Mother\u201d is back, sort of, in a re-imagined sequel series called \u201cHow I Met Your Father.\u201d Premiering Tuesday (Jan. 18)\u00a0on Hulu, \u201cHow I Met Your Father\u201d\u00a0follows Sophie (Kim Cattrall), who, in the year 2050, decides to video-call her unseen offscreen son and tell him about how she met his father \u2013 using that as a jump-off point for the majority of the series.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s set in the present day and follows the friendship and dating adventures of Sophie (Hilary Duff) in her 30s. Sophie, a New York-based photographer, is hopeful about finding true love despite having experienced a slew of insipid Tinder dates.<\/p>\n

Unlike the original series, Sophie\u2019s group of friends is not built-in when the series begins, but grows along the way. She meets Uber driver Jesse (Chris Lowell, \u201cGlow\u201d) , cynical after a video of his rejected proposal went viral online \u2014 leaving him known to the world as \u201cMr. Proposal Fail\u201d; his pal Sid (Suraj Sharma), who is about to propose to his own long-distance girlfriend at his bar, Pemberton\u2019s; Jesse\u2019s sister, Ellen (Tien Tran), who recently divorced her wife and moved to New York for a fresh start \u201cto ask out Kate McKinnon\u201d; and Sophie\u2019s impulsive roommate Valentina (Francia Raisa, \u201cGrown-ish\u201d), a stylist who returns from a business trip to London with a wealthy British beau, Charlie (Tom Ainsley). Charlie is now Sophie\u2019s surprise second roommate (\u201cOne thing led to another and now he \u2026 lives with us!\u201d Valentina says).<\/p>\n\n

The original series, which aired for nine seasons on CBS from 2005-2014, followed Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) while his older incarnation (voiced by Bob Saget, who never appeared onscreen the way Cattrall does) narrated a similar premise to his own kids.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow I Met Your Mother\u201d was a hit \u2014 averaging 9.5 million viewers its first season \u2014 and used Ted\u2019s story to also follow his womanizing friend Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), who had the catchphrase \u201clegen\u2026 wait for it \u2026 dary,\u201d power-couple Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan); and quirky Robin (Cobie Smulders). The show stood out from a slew of similar \u201cfriends hanging out\u201d sitcoms that all trailed in the wake of \u201cFriends\u201d with its elaborate inside jokes that made the friends group feel authentic \u2014 and the viewer feel in on the jokes.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow I Met Your Mother,\u201d though, had a notoriously awful ending. Its premise, right there in the title, should have been a slam-dunk \u2013\u00a0 but, instead, the story swerved off the rails in the 11th hour, killing the mother and having Ted get a \u201chappily ever after\u201d with Robin. Maybe, in retrospect, they should have called it \u201cHow I Got Back Together with Robin After Your Mother\u2019s Death.\u201d<\/p>\n
