The coronavirus pandemic may still be ongoing in the real world, but in the\u00a0reel<\/em>\u00a0world of \u201cEmily in Paris,\u201d it simply doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n

Season 2 of Netflix\u2019s hit romantic comedy\u00a0drops Dec. 22, however, viewers shouldn\u2019t expect to see any mention of COVID-19 in the City of Lights and Love.<\/p>\n

Star Lily Collins explained the reason behind the producers\u2019 decision not to dive deep into the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeason 1\u00a0allowed us an escapism when it came out that it felt it was something that needed to continue \u2014 not addressing it because it brings a sense of escapism and joy and laughter in a time that we need it the most,\u201d\u00a0Collins, 32, told\u00a0Variety\u00a0at the show\u2019s premiere on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The \u201cLove, Rosie\u201d actress then explained that filming during the pandemic of course came with some challenges. The team was \u201cshooting a show in a city that is highly populated where people are wearing masks, yet we\u2019re shooting in a world that doesn\u2019t exist with COVID \u2014 so it\u2019s making sure that when we\u2019re rolling the masks are off and when we stop rolling they come back on,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were a couple of times when they started shooting and I was like, \u2018Wait, half the people in the scene are still wearing masks,’\u201d Collins added.<\/p>\n

Other shows have chosen to embrace the reality of the pandemic, including drama series such as \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy,\u201d \u201cThe Resident,\u201d \u201cThis Is Us\u201d and \u201cShameless.\u201d Season 17 of \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d had its star Meredith Grey suffering from the virus, for example, while the previous season of ABC\u2019s \u201cThe Resident\u201d took place in a post-COVID vaccine society.<\/p>\n\n

The British-born actress is a producer on the upcoming season and also addressed the show\u2019s criticism last month. The series has been blasted by fans and critics alike for its\u00a0inaccurate portrayal\u00a0of the French capital.<\/p>\n

Collins also addressed concerns over diversity and inclusion in an\u00a0Elle UK\u00a0profile.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me as Emily, but also as a producer on [the show], after Season 1, hearing people\u2019s thoughts, concerns, questions, likes, dislikes, just feelings about it, there were certain things that spoke to the time that we\u2019re living in and what\u2019s right, and moral and correct and should be done,\u201d she revealed to the mag.<\/p>\n
