The Post is told by a top attorney (not involved in the case) that the incident may have repercussions for any future custody case over Khai \u2014 although, sources say, Gigi is determined to co-parent with Malik and thinks he\u2019s a great dad.<\/p>\n
Malik has also lost his record contract with RCA after his third solo album, \u201cNobody Is Listening,\u201d failed to light up the charts when it was released in January, only reaching No. 44 on the US Billboard 200.<\/p>\n
\u201cZayn feels like life is out to get him. He genuinely finds it hard to deal with the level of fame he had, and that comes out as if he\u2019s ungrateful and arrogant,\u201d said a music executive who has worked with him. \u201cIf\u00a0he was a bit more open about talking about his issues, I think that people would warm to him.\u201d<\/p>\n
But this type of troubling behavior is nothing new to those who know him.<\/p>\n\n
Malik freely admits it helps the \u201ccreative process \u2026\u00a0if you\u2019re smoking a good weed,\u201d and was seen smoking a joint\u00a0while on tour with One Direction in South America in 2014.<\/p>\n He was seen smoking marijuana in a 6 a.m. Instagram Live this January, prompting fans to wonder whether Khai was in the house.<\/p>\n One insider who worked frequently with the band fondly known as 1D told The Post that Malik\u2019s marijuana use got so bad that it made him \u201cparanoid\u201d \u2014 and led to former bandmate Harry Styles refusing to share a tour bus and private jet with him.<\/p>\n \u201cZayn wasn\u2019t happy in the band, it wasn\u2019t for him,\u201d the insider said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t like the whole constantly touring thing and being given a schedule.<\/p>\n Adv<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n \u201cHe was just so difficult that he wouldn\u2019t turn up for stuff, like photo shoots or even gigs. He would block himself in the house, smoking loads of weed, and it made him really unreliable,\u201d added the insider.<\/p>\n According to another record executive who worked with the band: \u201cYou just didn\u2019t know when Zayn was going to turn up, whether for a recording session or a concert.\u201d<\/p>\n A representative for Malik did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n One Direction was famously formed by Simon Cowell on the UK TV talent show \u201cThe X Factor\u201d back in 2010. Malik, Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson all auditioned as solo candidates before being put together, then went on to become the top-earning boy band of all time, with an estimated fortune of $340 million.<\/p>\n The insider said: \u201cIn the beginning, Zayn was quite sweet. He just became a different person. When you are smoking weed to that extent, it really affects you.<\/p>\n \u201cZayn became aggressive. He was very aggressive towards the end of the band, having fierce rows with people he worked with. He never takes responsibility for anything \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s always someone else\u2019s fault.\u201d<\/p>\n Malik\u2019s marijuana use \u201cdrove a wedge\u201d between him and the other band members, the insider added. \u201cHe\u2019d just be on the tour bus [smoking] all the way to the venue. It led Harry to get a separate tour bus with Niall and Liam \u2014 Louis would join Zayn. Harry wouldn\u2019t fly with Zayn either.\u201d<\/p>\n Styles\u2019 rep had no comment.<\/p>\n Malik quit the band in March 2015, citing \u201cstress.\u201d At the time the band was just two months into their On the Road Again Tour. In a statement at the time, Malik said:\u00a0\u201cI\u2019d like to apologize to the fans if I\u2019ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.\u201d<\/p>\n He later said he was left so unhappy in the band that he suffered from an eating disorder, writing in his 2016 autobiography, \u201cZayn\u201d: \u201cWhen I look back at images of myself \u2026 before the final tour, I can see how ill I was \u2026 Food was something I could control, so I did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n As for the four remaining band members, who went on to split a year later, \u201cEveryone was pleased that Zayn had gone, to be honest, he was not nice to be around \u2014\u00a0very arrogant,\u201d the insider said.<\/p>\n After Malik left, the rest of the 1D boys were \u201cpissed off\u201d when he gave interviews saying he hated their music, according to a music producer who worked with them. \u201cThey took offense to that.\u201d<\/p>\n Initially, Malik\u2019s solo career looked promising.<\/p>\n Adopting an alternative R&B style with his debut studio album, \u201cMind of Mine,\u201d in 2016 after signing with RCA, and its lead single, \u201cPillowtalk,\u201d Malik became the first British male artist to debut at No. 1 in both the UK and US, with his debut single and debut album.<\/p>\n \u201cAt first I thought, \u2018Oh, wow, Zayn\u2019s going to be a hit.\u2019 But he\u2019s released loads of music now and it\u2019s flopped,\u201d the producer said.<\/p>\n Malik also signed for a time with widely respected Brit music manager Sarah Stennett, who oversees Bebe Rexha and Rita Ora\u2019s careers.<\/p>\n \u201cSarah couldn\u2019t control him,\u201d said the producer. \u201cLook, even the biggest, hottest stars, from Adele to Dua Lipa, have to play the game. There\u2019s a certain amount of stuff they all sign up to do to be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n In 2016, Malik was minutes away from London\u2019s Wembley Stadium, where he was due to co-headline Capital Radio\u2019s Summertime Ball, when he pulled out of the gig. \u201cHis camp said, \u2018He\u2019s on his way,\u2019 and then he just turned his car\u00a0around and left,\u201d the producer said. Malik has also walked out on recent interviews with GQ and Billboard, leaving journalists baffled.<\/p>\n Malik\u2019s personal life has been no less troubled. His\u00a0former fianc\u00e9e, Perrie Edwards\u00a0of the girl group Little Mix, revealed how\u00a0he broke off their engagement in 2015.<\/p>\n In the 2016 book \u201cOne World,\u201d Edwards wrote: \u201cIt was horrible, the worst time in my life. A four-year relationship, two-year engagement ended by a simple text message. Just like that.\u201d<\/p>\n Malik later told The Fader magazine that he has too much respect for Edwards \u201cto end anything over text message.\u201d<\/p>\n He met Gigi Hadid at a party in 2015 and took her out to dinner at NYC\u2019s Bowery Hotel. Their\u00a0on-again, off-again romance\u00a0has been the stuff of countless headlines, and in September 2020, the couple welcomed baby girl Khai.\u00a0Gigi told Vogue that she endured a 14-hour home birth\u00a0at their farm in Bucks County, Pa. (Only medicinal marijuana is legal in Pennsylvania.)<\/p>\n One music executive who worked with One Direction told The Post that Malik had been craving a family life. \u201cZayn finds it very hard to trust people. He was brought up in a tough town by a single mom, so his issues all go back a long while.<\/p>\n \u201cHe felt betrayed and let down by people. A lot of people sold him out. All the [One Direction] boys got sold out at times by people who they thought were friends, so trusting people is not the easiest thing,\u201d the exec said. \u201cI would imagine it took a long time to build that trust with Gigi and her family. He found them when he really needed it. They scooped him up.\u201d<\/p>\n Malik and Gigi bought a farm close to her mom, where he got into horse riding and growing vegetables. Speaking of Yolanda, he told\u00a0GQ in 2018: \u00a0\u201cWe get on. She\u2019s really f\u2014ing cool. She\u2019s a Capricorn. She\u2019s the same star sign as me.\u201d<\/p>\n He also praised Gigi for getting his life on track when he was partying too hard. \u201cI had a very negative outlook on things. That might have been adolescence or testosterone or whatever the f\u2013k was running through my body at the time,\u201d he told GQ. \u201cShe\u2019s helped me to look at things from a positive angle.\u201d<\/p>\n Malik is now, however, legally banned from going near\u00a0Yolanda \u2014 whose own pursuit\u00a0of fame on Bravo show \u201cThe Real Housewives of Beverly Hills\u201d allegedly led to the breakdown of her marriage to music producer David Foster in 2015,\u00a0sources told People magazine.<\/p>\n Last week, Malik pleaded no contest to four counts of harassment after allegedly pushing Yolanda into a dresser and calling her a \u201cf\u2013king Dutch slut\u201d in a fight at the home he shared with Gigi in Pennsylvania. Malik has denied pushing Yolanda.<\/p>\n Court papers show that he must now complete 360 days of probation in addition to completing an anger management class.<\/p>\n He must also have no contact with John McMahon, a security guard for the Hadid family who witnessed the incident and whom he also allegedly harassed, as he reportedly screamed: \u201cGet the f\u2013k out of my f\u2014ing house, copper.\u201d At some point in the dispute, he allegedly referred to fathering Khai with the \u201cf\u2013king sperm that came out of my f\u2013king c\u2013k,\u201d according to documents filed in court.<\/p>\n The court docs also say Malik called Gigi \u2014\u00a0who was in Paris to walk the Fashion Week shows \u2014 and yelled to her: \u201cStrap on some f\u2013king balls and defend your partner against your f\u2013king mother in my house.\u201d<\/p>\n It remains unclear if they broke up before the fight or as a result of it. Gigi is believed to have fled Paris after the incident, missing the Isabel Marant show she was scheduled to walk, and flown home.<\/p>\n Gigi has refused to comment in detail on the matter but her rep said in a statement: \u201cGigi is solely focused on the best for Khai. She asks for privacy during this time.\u201d Neither Gigi nor Yolanda commented for this story.<\/p>\n A source close to Gigi told\u00a0People\u00a0Wednesday that the tensions between Yolanda and Zayn have been long-simmering.<\/p>\n \u201cYolanda is, of course, very protective of Gigi,\u201d said the source. \u201cShe wants the best for her daughter and grandchild. She has had some issues with Zayn. He has a complicated personality, and she thinks he could treat Gigi better. It\u2019s been hard at times for Gigi to live with him.\u201d<\/p>\n Malik wrote on Twitter: \u201cThis was and still should be a private matter but it seems for now there is a divisiveness and despite my efforts to restore us to a peaceful family environment that will allow for me to co-parent my daughter in a manner in which she deserves, this has been \u2018leaked\u2019 to the press. I am hopeful though for healing for all involved with the harsh words shared and more importantly I remain vigilant to protect Khai and give her the privacy she deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n Sources told The Post that Malik and Gigi plan to share joint custody of Khai, as Gigi knows he adores her, but his behavior will be watched closely.<\/p>\n Asked if there could be any issues over custody down the road, matrimonial and family law expert John O. Farley, a partner at Cohen Clair Lans Greifer Thorpe & Rottenstreich LLP, said: \u201cI cannot comment on facts or law concerning this specific case. However, in determining what is in the best interests of the child, the courts will seriously consider allegations of domestic violence when determining custody.\u201d<\/p>\n In an interview with\u00a0Harper\u2019s Bazaar in July, Gigi painted an idyllic picture of life with Malik and Khai, revealing they took her on little hikes in the woods, put on Bollywood music for her and sang Arabic nursery rhymes. (Both Malik and Gigi are Muslim.)<\/p>\n Asked about how Malik got on with her family, Gigi admitted: \u201cHe speaks his mind. When he\u2019s in the middle of a family thing and everyone\u2019s like, \u2018Zayn, whose side are you on?\u2019 he\u2019s charming. He\u2019s usually on my mom\u2019s side, so he\u2019s smart in that sense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n Zayn Malik may need to chill on his marijuana use.
