Nike said Thursday the Brooklyn company that made \u201cSatan\u00a0Shoes\u201d in collaboration with rapper Lil Nas X has agreed to voluntarily recall the shoes, as part of a legal settlement with the athletics giant.<\/p>\n

The settlement with MSCHF Product Studio resolves a trademark infringement lawsuit that Nike\u00a0filed last week over the black-and-red, devil-themed sneakers, which carry the Nike \u201cswoosh\u201d logo and quickly sold out at $1,018 a pair.<\/p>\n

Satan\u00a0Shoes are customized versions of the Nike Air Max 97 sneakers, with midsoles purporting to contain a drop of human blood, and printed with \u201cLuke 10:18,\u201d a reference to a Biblical verse that alludes to\u00a0Satan\u2019s fall from heaven.<\/p>\n

Only 666 pairs were made, with the last held back so that Lil Nas X, known for the song \u201cOld Town Road,\u201d could choose the recipient.<\/p>\n

Nike said MSCHF will offer full refunds to purchasers of its\u00a0Satan\u00a0Shoes, as well as to those of its Jesus Shoes, which were launched in 2019 and also based on the Air Max 97, \u201cto remove them from circulation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Limited edition shoes\u00a0can fetch premium prices among collectors, however, and those obtaining refunds could miss out on price appreciation.<\/p>\n\n

David Bernstein, who chairs the intellectual property litigation group at Debevoise & Plimpton and represents MSCHF, said the artistic messages MSCHF hoped the shoes would convey were \u201cdramatically amplified\u201d by Nike\u2019s lawsuit.<\/p>\n

Lil Nas X was not a defendant, and\u00a0never got to choose who received the last pair\u00a0after a Brooklyn judge temporarily halted further sales on April 1.<\/p>\n
