A Texas fourth-grader unexpectedly died in her sleep just three days after testing positive for COVID-19 \u2014 and now her family is desperately seeking answers.<\/p>\n

Makenzie Gongora, 9, of San Antonio, was tucked into bed by her mom on Feb. 2 after complaining she felt exhausted \u2014 and never woke up,\u00a0according to \u201cToday.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy sister-in-law later checked on her at night and realized that she was no longer breathing and could not find a pulse,\u201d the girl\u2019s aunt, Erica Gongora, told the program.<\/p>\n

According to the family, Makenzie first complained of a stomachache and a headache on Jan. 29 at her after-school program.<\/p>\n

After staff at the program took her temperature and found she had a fever, the girl\u2019s mom, Kristle Gongora, took her daughter to Brooke Army Medical Center, where Makenzie tested positive for COVID-19.<\/p>\n

\u201cKenzie did not have any respiratory issues,\u201d another aunt, Victoria Southworth, told \u201cToday.\u201d \u201cThere was nothing major going on. All the symptoms were mild.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Doctors sent Makenzie home, telling her mom to monitor the fever, Gongora said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe doctors told my sister-in-law (to) take her home and to make her comfortable, to monitor her fever, and if it got over a certain point, or if there were any other major issues that occurred, to go ahead and bring her back to the hospital,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no labored breathing or anything like that at that point,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

The family said Makenzie was small for her age, but they were not aware of any pre-existing conditions before her death.<\/p>\n

The grieving family is now awaiting autopsy results to determine what killed their little girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just want to know,\u201d Erica Gongora said. \u201cWas there something else that could have been done that could have saved her life?\u201d<\/p>\n

A GoFundMe page set up by Southworth had raised nearly $65,000 by Monday morning \u2014 more than double the $30,000 goal.<\/p>\n
