More than 10,000 people in the US and abroad are getting their internet from a\u00a0network of SpaceX satellites, the Elon Musk-led company says.<\/p>\n

The rocket-building firm touted the number in a\u00a0filing\u00a0with the Federal Communications Commission as it looked to expand the Starlink satellite internet service.<\/p>\n

\u201cStarlink\u2019s performance is not theoretical or experimental,\u201d SpaceX wrote in the Wednesday filing, adding that the network\u2019s \u201cperformance is rapidly accelerating in real time as part of its public beta program\u201d that\u00a0launched in October.<\/p>\n

SpaceX aims to provide access to high-speed internet in rural areas with Starlink, which costs $99 a month plus $499 for the equipment needed to connect to the network. The company said in August 2020 that \u201cnearly 700,000 individuals\u201d had expressed interest in Starlink.<\/p>\n\n

While SpaceX warned early Starlink customers that the service could be spotty, the company said it is \u201cmeeting and exceeding\u201d speeds of 100 megabits per second.<\/p>\n

\u201cStarlink continues to improve as SpaceX deploys additional infrastructure and capability, averaging two Starlink launches per month, to add significant on-orbit capacity alongside activation of additional gateways to improve performance and expand service coverage areas across the country,\u201d SpaceX told the FCC.<\/p>\n

In the filing, SpaceX asked the feds to designate it as an \u201cEligible
\nTelecommunications Carrier,\u201d which it needs to provide Starlink service in seven states including New York and Tennessee.<\/p>\n

SpaceX won access to those states through an FCC auction to bring broadband internet service to rural areas,\u00a0according to CNBC.<\/p>\n
