Netflix\u00a0will not be adding a disclaimer to \u201cThe Crown\u201d that states the show is fictionalized,\u00a0Variety\u00a0has confirmed.<\/p>\n

Last week, U.K. Culture Secretary\u00a0Oliver Dowden asked\u00a0that such a label be added to the show in an interview with Daily Mail, citing that he fears \u201ca generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Netflix disagrees, and believes that their viewers are aware of its fictionalized nature.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have always presented \u2018The Crown\u2019 as a drama \u2013 and we have every confidence our members understand it\u2019s a work of fiction that\u2019s broadly based on historical events,\u201d a Netflix spokesperson tells\u00a0Variety. \u201cAs a result we have no plans \u2014 and see no need \u2014 to add a disclaimer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dowden wrote a private letter to Netflix to discuss the matter, which was not made public, and the streamer did respond, though also privately.<\/p>\n\n

Season 4 of \u201cThe Crown\u201d sees the royal family\u2019s storyline inching closer to the present day, with Princess Diana being one of its main focuses. \u201cThe Crown\u201d depicts her struggles with bulimia in several episodes, which are flagged with a health warning at the beginning.<\/p>\n

Emma Corrin, who portrays Princess Diana in \u201cThe Crown,\u201d\u00a0told\u00a0Variety\u00a0in an interview: \u201cThose were difficult scenes to film and I also feel like taking her to that place was a good thing. It gave me somewhere to go with her, but I was exhausted a lot those days coming off set because at the same time as you\u2019re playing someone who\u2019s fictionalized and obviously you\u2019re not feeling or thinking those things, it\u2019s your job to make yourself feel that way.\u201d<\/p>\n
