Model Halima Aden will no longer \u201ccompromise\u201d her religious beliefs in the name of the \u201ctoxic mess called fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old star \u2014 who has appeared on the covers of British Vogue, Vogue Arabia, Allure and more \u2014 is walking away from her runway career, telling fans on Instagram Wednesday that the gig would often force her to skip prayers, wear clothes she wasn\u2019t comfortable in and style her hijab in ways she felt betrayed her Muslim values.<\/p>\n

She came to the realization during the coronavirus lockdown, which gave her time to reflect on how her career choice impacted her religion.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey could call me tomorrow and not even for $10 million would I ever risk compromising my hijab ever again,\u201d she wrote, pledging to never take part in runway shows or travel for fashion weeks again.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s where all the bad energy came from,\u201d she asserted.<\/p>\n

She also expressed regret over specific campaigns she took part in, including American Eagle\u2019s 2017 promotion of their first denim hijab.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy did I allow them to put jeans on my head when at the time I had only ever worn skirts and long dresses?\u201d she wrote, explaining, \u201cI was just so desperate back then for any \u2018representation\u2019 that I lost touch with who I was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

The same year, a\u00a0Glamour shoot\u00a0left the model emotional after allowing stylists to style her hijab with green fabric and feathers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went back to my hotel room and just sobbed after this shoot because deep down I knew this wasn\u2019t it. But was too scared to speak up,\u201d she wrote. \u201cAlso very common struggle when you are the FIRST to do something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aden set several records for Muslim women in modeling, including\u00a0being the first to wear a hijab and burkini\u00a0in Sports Illustrated\u2019s Swimsuit Issue last year.<\/p>\n
