Stephen Dorff looks back fondly on his shared screen time with Johnny Depp.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dorff \u2014 who worked with Depp on the 2009 action flick \u201cPublic Enemy\u201d \u2014 described the embattled star as a \u201cgreat guy\u201d who \u201cwas great to me\u201d during their time on set.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe was a stand-up legend to me,\u201d Dorff told Page Six. \u201c\u2026 He was somebody who was generous, was friendly and giving to me, at a time when I\u2019d just lost my mom and I was probably in the most vulnerable state I\u2019d ever been in my life \u2026 I got to act with one of my heroes as an actor and one of my heroes as a director [Michael Mann].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Depp, 57,\u00a0recently\u00a0lost a libel case\u00a0against the UK newspaper the Sun for describing him as a \u201cwife-beater\u201d in regards to his tempestuous,\u00a0short-lived marriage\u00a0to fellow star Amber Heard.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dorff, 47, was reticent to weigh in on the lurid accusations Depp and Heard\u00a0hurled at one another\u00a0during the court case, noting, \u201cI just have to say it\u2019s a shame that publicly people\u2019s lives have to get thrown out there in the world and I would just hope there\u2019s some healing at some point for him and for her and for whatever because the truth is the guy is a great guy and was great to me. That\u2019s all I can really go on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Dorff, who stars in the new film\u00a0\u201cEmbattled,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0began his career in the late 1980s guest-starring on sitcoms like \u201cDiff\u2019rent Strokes,\u201d \u201cRoseanne\u201d and \u201cBlossom,\u201d but his breakout role was in \u201cThe Power of One\u201d opposite Sir John Gielgud and Morgan Freeman. Along the way, he\u2019s starred in cult movies like \u201cCecil B. Demented\u201d and as Alicia Silverstone\u2019s love interest in the Aerosmith video for \u201cCryin.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n

He credits his family for managing to stay grounded and not falling prey to the usual Hollywood pitfalls.<\/p>\n

\u201cI credit my mom and dad for being really incredibly nurturing parents, almost too much,\u201d he explained. \u201cWhen I was 16 and working and I had my own money saved up by my parents, which was really nice of them because a lot of the kids I was up against, they were feeding the family.<\/p>\n

\u201cLuckily my mom saved my money so I was able to get my own car and get my own stuff. And of course I wanted my own place, my own pimpy apartment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

And how \u201cpimpy\u201d was Dorff\u2019s apartment?<\/p>\n

He laughed, admitting that he had of plenty of black leather couches but also an impressive art collection, which was fostered by friendships with artists like Ed Ruscha.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve sold some stuff along the years when I needed some extra moolah,\u201d he revealed. \u201cI had so many opportunities that I could kill myself for not taking back in the day. But you live and you learn. I\u2019m hoping I never have to sell again. And I\u2019m not in that game of flipping them. I look at art as pictures I want to look at.\u201d<\/p>\n

In \u201cEmbattled,\u201d Dorff plays a famous MMA fighter who has a difficult relationship with his son, who yearns to follow in his father\u2019s footsteps.<\/span><\/p>\n
