\u201cGame of Thrones\u201d actor\u00a0Iwan Rheon\u00a0starred as the villainous Ramsey Bolton from 2013 to 2016, appearing in 20 episodes of the HBO fantasy series and becoming perhaps the most reviled character in \u201cThrones\u201d history. Ramsey\u2019s rape of\u00a0Sansa Stark\u00a0on their wedding night in the fifth season episode \u201cUnbowed, Unbent, Unbroken\u201d resulted in outrage over the series\u2019 depiction of sexual assault and violence against female characters. In a new interview with\u00a0Metro\u00a0(via\u00a0Insider), Rheon says filming the controversial rape scene was a rock bottom moment for his career.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was horrible. Nobody wanted to be there. Nobody wants to do that, but if it\u2019s telling a story then you have to tell it truthfully,\u201d Rheon said. \u201cThey didn\u2019t sensationalize it or anything. It was very, very hard watching. It\u2019s a horrible thing that happens, unfortunately\u2026 It was the worst day of my career.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rheon continued, \u201cChopping someone\u2019s finger off you don\u2019t really see it, and when you\u2019re doing like a close up, it\u2019s a piece of plastic. We\u2019re just acting, it\u2019s not real. Then something like that where you\u2019re in the actual reality of the situation is very difficult to deal with. It was a horrible, horrible day. This is something that we shouldn\u2019t even have to worry about, because it\u2019s something that shouldn\u2019t exist in this world but unfortunately it does.\u201d<\/p>\n

Filming a sexual assault scene troubled Rheon just as did fellow \u201cThrones\u201d cast member Emilia Clarke. As revealed by co-star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in\u00a0an interview last month, Clarke felt \u201cdegraded\u201d by having to film a rape scene in the \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d pilot.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor Emilia to play that in Series One was really tough and degrading, because what that character goes through is horrific,\u201d Coster-Waldau said. \u201cShe\u2019s sold to a guy who rapes her, but her way of getting through that is a massive journey, right?\u201d<\/p>\n\n

For Sansa Stark actress Sophie Turner, being the central character in a sexual assault scene played a role in getting her to advocate for womens\u2019 rights issues in the real world. As Turner told\u00a0Harper\u2019s Bazaar\u00a0in 2019,\u00a0\u201cInitially, I didn\u2019t feel there was anything that stayed with me from all the things Sansa went through. But though I think it hasn\u2019t affected me emotionally, I did start thinking about the domestic abuse and rape, and it spurred this little part of me that might be an activist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following his role on \u201cGame of Thrones,\u201d Rheon went on to star in films such as \u201cThe Dirt\u201d and \u201cBerlin, I Love You,\u201d plus television shows like \u201cInhumans\u201d and \u201cAmerican Gods.\u201d All eight season of \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d are currently streaming on HBO Max.<\/p>\n
