Tesla\u2019s under-construction Berlin gigafactory will produce Model Y vehicles with a new battery design, a move that CEO Elon Musk says could result in a \u201csignificant production risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musk has said its European plant will be used to develop new production methods for building Teslas with a \u201clot of new technology,\u201d which will introduce risk. The plan is to eventually export the new methods to Tesla\u2019s factories in China and California.<\/p>\n

\u201cFremont and Shanghai will transition in 2 years when new tech is proven,\u201d\u00a0Musk tweeted.<\/p>\n

The company plans to start the production of Model Y in Berlin during the second half of 2021.<\/p>\n\n

Tesla boasts that its new 4680 battery cell can store more energy and is easier to make, and says it is the key to achieving its goal of cutting battery costs in half and ramping up battery production nearly 100-fold by 2030.<\/p>\n

The electric automaker last week\u00a0broke its quarterly record\u00a0with 139,300 vehicles delivered in the third quarter.<\/p>\n

Shares of Tesla were trading up 2.3 percent Thursday morning, at $435.29.<\/p>\n
