Stars and dignitaries \u2014 a former president, media moguls and a who\u2019s who of A-list entertainment luminaries \u2014 posted heartfelt RIPs.<\/p>\n
And even across the Atlantic, a British soccer star celebrated a key goal by flashing the \u201cWakanda Forever\u201d salute, his hands in fists and his arms crossed over his heart.<\/p>\n
The tributes came is many forms Saturday for\u00a0actor Chadwick Boseman, who was lauded for his vast talent and dignity, a day after his death, at age 43, from colon cancer \u2014 an illness he fought in secret for four years with the same quiet courage he showed in his on-screen portrayals of heroes.<\/p>\n
Boseman left behind a wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, who he married in the last months of his life.<\/p>\n
Accolades poured in from the hills of Hollywood to the trenches of pediatric cancer hospitals, where he had performed selfless charity work.<\/p>\n
Boseman inspired millions as the charismatic \u201cBlack Panther\u201d in the 2018 Marvel blockbuster, but none more poignantly than the young patients he visited, even as he fought the same illness, his own cancer, in private.<\/p>\n
To them, Boseman was King T\u2019Challa, a superhero come alive at their bedsides.<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo years ago, Chadwick visited the St. Jude campus and brought with him not only toys for our patients but also joy, courage and inspiration,\u201d a rep at the Memphis-based hospital tweeted.<\/p>\n
Boseman kept in touch with the young patients he met, so even as \u201cBlack Panther\u201d was still in production, he knew that at least two little boys were fighting to survive their terminal cancers just a little longer.<\/p>\n
The boys, named Ian and Taylor wanted to live long enough to see the movie.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a humbling experience,\u201d Boseman said in a 2018 post-release interview on SiriusXM.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause, you\u2019re like, \u2018This can\u2019t mean that much to them.\u2019 But seeing how the world has taken this on, seeing how the movement, how it\u2019s taken on a life of its own \u2014 I realized that they anticipated something great.\u201d<\/p>\n
Boseman said he was reminded of when he was a child waiting for Christmas, or a new video game.<\/p>\n\n
\u201cI did live life waiting for those moments. And so, it put me back in the mind of being a kid, just to experience those two little boys\u2019 anticipation for this movie and when I found out they \u2026\u201d Boseman said, cutting himself off and beginning to cry.<\/p>\n
The boys had not lived to see the movie\u2019s release.<\/p>\n
The heads of Marvel and its parent company, Disney, were among those grieving.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe mourn all that he was, as well as everything he was destined to become,\u201d Disney Chairman Robert Iger tweeted.<\/p>\n
\u201cEach time [Boseman] stepped on set, he radiated charisma and joy,\u201d agreed Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, on Twitter.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd each time he appeared on screen, he created something truly indelible.<\/p>\n
He was as smart and kind and powerful and strong as any person he portrayed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Among his Avengers co-stars, Robert Downey Jr. noted that \u201cMr. Boseman leveled the playing field while fighting for his life \u2026 that\u2019s heroism.\u201d<\/p>\n
Angela Bassett, who plays his mother in the blockbuster, called him \u201ca beautiful spirit, a consummate artist, a soulful brother.\u201d<\/p>\n
Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson tweeted that Boseman \u201cradiated power and peace,\u201d and Hollywood icon Samuel L. Jackson called him \u201ca talented and giving artist.\u201d<\/p>\n
Former President\u00a0Barack Obama recalled\u00a0Boseman visiting the White House in 2013 as he gained notoriety for playing Jackie Robinson in biopic, \u201c42.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cChadwick came to the White House to work with kids,\u201d Obama tweeted. \u201cYou could tell right away that he was blessed. To be young, gifted, and Black; to use that power to give them heroes to look up to; to do it all while in pain \u2014 what a use of his years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Boseman\u2019s last tweet, from\u00a0earlier this month, celebrated the new Democratic vice presidential nominee with an old photo of the two together. \u201cYES @KamalaHarris!\u201d the post read.<\/p>\n
Harris tweeted the same photo shortly after Boseman\u2019s death was announced, saying, \u201cHeartbroken.\u201d She called him \u201cbrilliant, kind, learned and humble.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Saturday at England\u2019s Wembley Stadium, Arsenal soccer star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck the \u201cWakanda Forever\u201d pose after scoring the opening goal against Liverpool.<\/p>\n
Aubameyang had celebrated a goal last season by donning a mask from the blockbuster.<\/p>\n
\u201cMay you Rest in Peace,\u201d Aubameyang wrote on Instagram. \u201cYou gave us so much Hope and strength thanks for everything #wakandaforever.\u201d<\/p>\n
Boseman, famous for his portrayal of Robinson, died on the same day that Major League Baseball celebrated the man who broke the game\u2019s color barrier.<\/p>\n
In another strange coincidence, Boseman died on the birthday of Jack Kirby, the legendary comic artist who created Black Panther.<\/p>\n
