Johnny Depp\u2019s libel\u00a0case in the U.K.\u00a0concluded on Tuesday after an\u00a0explosive three weeks. The trial focused on the actor\u2019s\u00a0tumultuous five-year relationship\u00a0with\u00a0Amber Heard, putting her\u00a0claims of domestic violence\u00a0back in the spotlight. Depp, who sued over the\u00a0Sun<\/em>\u2019s article that called him a \u201cwife-beater,\u201d has adamantly denied\u00a0Heard\u2019s allegations\u00a0and went to London to clear his name.<\/p>\n

Both Depp, 57, and Heard, 34, were in court on Tuesday, as they were each day of the trial. In his closing submission, Depp\u2019s lawyer told the high court that Heard is a \u201ccompulsive liar\u201d and \u201cunreliable witness\u201d as the defense relied on her allegations of abuse. The\u00a0Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em>\u00a0star is suing News Group Newspapers (NGN), owner of the\u00a0Sun<\/em>, and the tabloid\u2019s executive editor, Dan Wootton, over the 2018 article that referred to \u201coverwhelming evidence\u201d he attacked the actress.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the big points to the small points, Ms. Heard has proved herself to be a wholly unreliable witness, and, frankly, a compulsive liar, and I don\u2019t say that lightly,\u201d\u00a0Depp\u2019s lawyer, David Sherborne, told the court. According to the\u00a0Guardian<\/em>, Depp\u2019s lawyer once again claimed Heard was the aggressor, highlighting a recording of the former spouses in which she supposedly refers to hitting the actor. (She has denied\u00a0Depp\u2019s claims of abuse.)<\/p>\n

\u201cAt its very core, we say it demonstrates that she is the abuser, not Mr. Depp. He is no wife-beater,\u201d Sherborne told the judge. \u201cIf it was a man who had said what Ms. Heard said and who had admitted to what she admitted to, if this was Mr. Depp for example, and it was the other way around, can you imagine what consternation there would be?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sherborne called Heard a \u201ccomplex individual with a complex history,\u201d noting she got a restraining order against Depp in 2016 in front of a \u201cbarrage\u201d of media in order to become an advocate for victims of domestic violence. \u201cShe has picked up her theme and run with it. New allegations of domestic violence have tumbled out over the years \u2026 even more in this courtroom. It is hard to keep up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Depp\u2019s attorney argued the\u00a0Sun<\/em>\u00a0\u201ctried, convicted and sentenced\u201d the actor over Heard\u2019s claims. Depp is suing to clear his name, \u201csubjecting himself to this painful, public process,\u201d Sherborne noted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy else would Mr. Depp, this private man as he explained, expose all the most intimate details of his private life,\u201d Sherborne continued. Depp\u2019s addiction issues with drugs and alcohol were a focus throughout the trial as Heard claimed she was often abused when he was intoxicated. However, Sherborne stated Depp \u201chas never hit a woman in his entire life, period, full stop, nada.\u201d<\/p>\n

NGN\u2019s attorney, Sasha Wass, said in her closing submission on Monday, \u201cThere is no doubt that Mr. Depp regularly and systematically abused his wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heard submitted 14 allegations of abuse from 2013 to 2016 and was the main witness.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe characterization that he is a wife beater is entirely truthful,\u201d she\u00a0declared, calling the actor \u201ca hopeless addict who repeatedly lost his self-control and all ability to restrain his anger.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wass added, \u201ca deep misogyny \u2026 lay at the root of Mr. Depp\u2019s anger.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heard spoke out on the steps of the Royal Courts of Justice in London on Tuesday as the trial concluded.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter obtaining a restraining order in 2016 and finalizing my divorce, I just wanted to move on with my life.\u00a0I did not file this lawsuit and, despite its significance, I would have preferred not to be here in court,\u201d Heard said. \u201cIt has been incredibly painful to relive the break up of my relationship, have my motives and my truth questioned, and the most traumatic and intimate details of my life with Johnny shared in court and broadcast around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
