Reacting to\u00a0The Post\u2019s front page\u00a0Monday, President Trump said Gov. Andrew Cuomo must squash a spike in violent crime in New York City \u2014 or he will send in federal authorities to restore order.<\/p>\n

Trump told reporters in the Oval Office he was particularly upset by reports that\u00a0Brooklyn woman Shatavia Walls, 33, was shot to death\u00a0after complaining about illegal fireworks. He said the NYPD is \u201cafraid to do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t let this happen to the cities. New York was up 348 percent, the crime wave. So the governor has to do something about it. And if the governor is not going to do something about it, we\u2019ll do something about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what\u2019s happening in New York, a place I love \u2014 I love New York. Look at what\u2019s going on over there. The woman who was shot because she said, \u2018Could you please not light off firecrackers?\u2019 And they turned around and shot her eight times and she died. That\u2019s not our civilization, that\u2019s not about us,\u201d the commander-in-chief told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then the police are afraid to do anything. I know New York very well, I know the police very well, New York\u2019s Finest, and the fact is, they\u2019re restricted from doing anything, they can\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump did not directly mention Mayor Bill de Blasio, who, like Cuomo, is a Democrat.<\/p>\n

Trump said the use of federal law enforcement officers last week, dispatched to Portland, Ore., may provide a template.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019m going to do something, that I can tell you, because we\u2019re not going to leave New York and Chicago and Philadelphia and Detroit and Baltimore and all of these \u2014 Oakland is a mess \u2014 we\u2019re not going to let this happen in our country, it\u2019s all run by liberal Democrats,\u201d Trump said, adding: \u201cWe\u2019re going to have more federal law enforcement, that I can tell you. In Portland, they\u2019ve done a fantastic job. They\u2019ve been there three days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump said Portland officials\u00a0opposed the federal intervention\u00a0because they are afraid for their own safety. He said unrest in the city isn\u2019t a mere continuation of protests over the killing of George Floyd by Minnesota police, but is the work of \u201canarchists.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople say \u2018protesters.\u2019 These people are anarchists. These are people that hate our country. And we\u2019re not going to let it go forward,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Trump repeatedly mentioned a surge in violent crime in Chicago and said presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden would preside over worsening crime if elected.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is worse than Afghanistan, by far. This is worse than anything anyone\u2019s ever seen \u2014 all run by the same liberal Democrats. And you know what? If Biden got in, that would be true for the country, the whole country would go to hell, and we\u2019re not going to let it go to hell,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
