Stay informed with\u00a0<em>travel news<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>updates<\/em><\/li>\r\n \t\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64017\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/american-airlines-flight-mask-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"915\" height=\"610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/american-airlines-flight-mask-2.jpg 915w, https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/american-airlines-flight-mask-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/american-airlines-flight-mask-2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 915px) 100vw, 915px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could tell passengers were very nervous that masks were not mandated,\u201d said Wong, a stay-at-home mom from Soho who has been staying with her husband and two kids, ages 5 and 7, in Miami since Mayor Bill de Blasio announced city schools would be closed.<\/p>\n<p>Wong said social distancing rules were strictly enforced at Miami\u2019s airport, but that passengers\u00a0were crammed together\u00a0on her flight \u2014 about half without masks, though a couple of people wore full hazmat suits.<\/p>\n<p>She shared several photos she snapped of the cramped cabin, showing some passengers with masks and gloves while others dispensed with the protective measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked how this was allowed during distancing requirements, and got \u2018nothing we can do about it\u2019 shrugs and offered an 800 number to change my reservation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven the pilot came on mid-flight to apologize for the cramped conditions. Unlike in Canada, masks were not mandated to fly. No temperature checks,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-64018\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/american-airlines-flight-mask-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"915\" height=\"610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/american-airlines-flight-mask-3.jpg 915w, https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/american-airlines-flight-mask-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/american-airlines-flight-mask-3-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 915px) 100vw, 915px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough I did ask to be sat in an emptier part of the plane \u2014 and was told the airline could not accommodate \u2014 I did not realize how packed the flight was until I boarded,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>At the gate, she said, an airline rep said that \u201cif American Airlines sells 150 seats, they will board 150 seats \u2014 it\u2019s a business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all learning to adapt to the new social norms, but businesses are still operating in the old paradigm and need to pivot for public safety. I feel airlines should consider temporary policies to match the current federal mandates of social distancing and mask wearing,\u201d Wong said.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, American Airlines said that \u201cto encourage social distancing, gate agents will reassign seats to create more space between customers. Once on board \u2014 provided there aren\u2019t any aircraft weight or balance restrictions \u2014 customers can move to another seat within their ticketed cabin subject to availability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>The airline said it now also blocks \u201c50 percent of standard middle seats\u201d on all its flights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur team also monitors flights closely to maintain social distancing,\u201d a rep told The Post in an email, adding that \u201cwe encourage our customers to follow CDC guidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CDC, however, does not require passengers\u00a0to wear masks.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Manhattan woman who flew on an American Airlines flight from Miami to LaGuardia says she was shocked that the flight was packed full \u2014 and about half the passengers did not wear masks\u00a0despite the coronavirus pandemic.
