Stay informed with\u00a0<em>travel news<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>updates<\/em><\/li>\r\n \t\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cNo bare-bottom farting,\u201d Swan advised about posterior pandemic panic, in a measured, mildly amused tone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLuckily, we wear a mask, which covers our farts all the time,\u201d Swan said, referring to the protective aspects of pants, shorts, dresses, underwear and other garments. \u201cI think that what we should do in terms of social distancing and being safe is that \u2026 you don\u2019t fart close to other people, and that you don\u2019t fart with your bottom bare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Australian emergency physician Dr. Andy Tagg also floated the question via Twitter,\u00a0asking, \u201cSo, can the bottom-based emissions of someone with coronavirus be silent and deadly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tagg pondered whether flatulence itself is an \u201caerosol-generating procedure.\u201d (His determination:\u00a0yes.) A recent study, in fact,\u00a0suggested\u00a0a post-flush toilet plume could even be cause for concern when it comes to spreading the coronavirus via \u201caerosolized feces.\u201d Plus, scientists\u00a0have confirmed\u00a0that fecal-oral transmission itself is an issue due to the presence of the virus in poop that is why health officials\u00a0in Oregon\u00a0and\u00a0New York\u00a0have even cautioned against oral contact with feces during sex.<\/p>\n\n<p>Unfortunately, as Tagg observed, there is \u201cnot a great deal of research\u201d available to come to a firm conclusion about the perils of passing COVID-19 while passing gas.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s all backed up by\u00a0Dr. Aaron E. Glatt, a Mount Sinai South Nassau epidemiologist and professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudies have clearly shown that a significant percentage of COVID-19 patients do have\u00a0GI [gastrointestinal] symptoms\u00a0(alone, or in combination with respiratory or other general symptoms) at the time of illness presentation,\u201d Glatt told The Post via email.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, there are no published data on whether flatulence alone presents any risk of transmission, although in a clothed person, it would be unlikely to be a significant route of transmission,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n<p>Where does that leave us? Tagg, co-founder of the medical education site\u00a0Don\u2019t Forget the Bubbles, suggests\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0throwing caution to the, um, wind. He instead proposes keeping your pants on and considering them part of your personal protection equipment, just in case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps SARS-CoV-2 can be spread [through] the power of parping \u2014 we need more evidence,\u201d he\u00a0tweeted, adding, \u201cSo remember to wear appropriate PPE at all times and stay safe!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The smell may be hell but the mist could leave you pissed.
