The caption includes such hashtags as #heftytotherescue, #riskingourlivestosaveyours and #pleasedonateppe, with the \u201cppe\u201d referring to \u201cpersonal protective equipment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, staffers at the hospital near Columbus Circle on Wednesday tied the lack of basic supplies there to the death of assistant nursing manager Kious Kelly, who tested positive for coronavirus about two weeks ago.<\/p>\n
Kelly, 48, was admitted to Mount Sinai\u2019s flagship hospital on the Upper East Side on March 17 and died Tuesday night, the workers said.<\/p>\n
\u201cKious didn\u2019t deserve this,\u201d one nurse said. \u201cThe hospital should be held responsible. The hospital killed him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another nurse described \u201cissues with supplies for about a year now,\u201d during which it got \u201cto the point where we had to hide our own supplies and go to other units looking for stuff because even the supply room would have nothing most of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
\u201cBut when we started getting COVID patients, it became critical,\u201d the nurse said.<\/p>\n
The nurse sources said they were using the same PPE between infected and non-infected patients and, because there were no more spare gowns in the hospital, they took to wearing trash bags to stop the spread of infection.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had to reuse our masks, gowns and the [face] shield,\u201d one nurse said. \u201cWe were told, \u2018You get one for the entire time until this is over.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
The nurse also said various items, including masks, wipes and Purell hand sanitizer, began \u201cdisappearing through the night.\u201d<\/p>\n
A spokesman for the hospital strongly disagreed, when contacted Wednesday, that they did not have the proper equipment and were not protecting their staff.<\/p>\n
Another nurse described Kelly as \u201ca brother to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was willing to help others in need, especially in this coronavirus outbreak,\u201d the nurse said.<\/p>\n
Kelly\u2019s younger sister, Marya Sherron of Indianapolis, confirmed his death to The Post and said he had informed her of his illness about 10 days earlier.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe told me he had the coronavirus,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was in ICU but he thought he was OK. He didn\u2019t think it was serious as it was.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sherron \u2014 who said she \u201cabsolutely\u201d believed her brother was infected at the hospital \u2014 said he had \u201csevere asthma\u201d but was otherwise healthy.<\/p>\n
Kelly\u00a0had trouble talking due\u00a0to the disease, so the siblings communicated by text until his condition worsened and he stopped responding about a week ago, she said.<\/p>\n\n
\u201cI tried to get him several times but I was told by the doctors that he was on a ventilator,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Sherron said she was told on Monday that he might not pull through, and that he died about 11 p.m. Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are broken,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Sherron also said she wanted the city to know \u201cwhat an amazing person my brother was\u201d and to \u201chold the powers that be accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOur nurses and medical staff need protection and no one is fighting for their safety,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
In a prepared statement, Mount Sinai said of Kelly\u2019s death, \u201cWe are deeply saddened by the passing of a beloved member of our nursing staff.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis growing crisis has already devastated hundreds of families and turned our frontline professionals into true American heroes,\u201d the hospital network said.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, we lost another hero \u2014 a compassionate colleague, friend and selfless caregiver.\u201d<\/p>\n
In January, Kelly was featured by Mount Sinai on its website, which quoted a letter in which he was hailed as an \u201cangel\u201d by Joseph Fuoco, whose late mom, Camile Fuoco, underwent almost four years of breast cancer treatments before her death at Mount Sinai West last summer.<\/p>\n
\u201cAssistant Nurse Manager Kious Jordan Kelly, RN, showed my mom and us empathy and compassion that helped us get through the weekend and what was to come,\u201d Joseph wrote.<\/p>\n
