Stay informed with\u00a0<em>travel news<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>updates<\/em><\/li>\r\n \t\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\n<p>Identical amounts of the powerful antioxidant are then re-administered three or four times a day, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Each dose is more than 16 times the National Institutes of Health\u2019s daily recommended dietary allowance of vitamin C, which is just 90 milligrams for adult men and 75 milligrams for adult women.<\/p>\n<p>The regimen is based on experimental treatments administered to people with the coronavirus in Shanghai, China, Weber said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe patients who received vitamin C did significantly better than those who did not get vitamin C,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt helps a tremendous amount, but it is not highlighted because it\u2019s not a sexy drug.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for Northwell \u2014 which operates 23 hospitals, including Lenox Hill Hospital on Manhattan\u2019s Upper East Side \u2014 said that vitamin C was being \u201cwidely used\u201d as a coronavirus treatment throughout the system, but noted that medication protocols varied from patient to patient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the clinician decides,\u201d spokesman Jason Molinet said.<\/p>\n<p>About 700 patients are being treated for coronavirus across the hospital network, Molinet said, but it\u2019s unclear how many are getting the vitamin C treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The vitamin C is administered in addition to such medicines as the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, the antibiotic azithromycin, various biologics and blood thinners, Weber said.<\/p>\n\n<p>As of Tuesday, New York hospitals have federal permission to\u00a0give patients\u00a0a cocktail of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin to desperately ill patients on a \u201ccompassionate care\u201d basis.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump has\u00a0tweeted that the unproven, combination therapy\u00a0has \u201ca real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weber, 34, said vitamin C levels in coronavirus patients drop dramatically when they suffer sepsis, an inflammatory response that occurs when their bodies overreact to the infection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes all the sense in the world to try and maintain this level of vitamin C,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A clinical trial into the effectiveness of intravenous vitamin C on coronavirus patients began Feb. 14 at Zhongnan Hospital in Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seriously sick\u00a0coronavirus patients\u00a0in New York state\u2019s largest hospital system are being given massive doses of vitamin C \u2014 based on promising reports that it\u2019s helped people in hard-hit China, The Post has learned.
