Stay informed with\u00a0<em>travel news<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>updates<\/em><\/li>\r\n \t\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\n<p>The suggestion of a new virus starting just as China\u00a0starts lifting its strict quarantines\u00a0from COVID-19, which originated in the Asian nation, sparked panic among many on social media, with #hantavirus trending.<\/p>\n<p>However, experts were quick to point out that it is\u00a0not a new virus\u00a0\u2014 and has only rarely thought to have been passed between humans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe #Hantavirus first emerged in 1950s in the American-Korean war in Korea (Hantan river). It spreads from rat\/mice if humans ingest their body fluids. Human-human transmission is rare,\u201d Swedish scientist\u00a0Dr. Sumaiya Shaikh tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease do not panic, unless you plan to eat rats,\u201d she stressed.<\/p>\n<p>The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u00a0(CDC) said hantavirus is rare\u00a0\u2014 but put the death rate at 38 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms may occur up to eight weeks \u201cafter exposure to fresh urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents,\u201d the CDC says, noting it can occasionally also come from bites from infected rats or mice.<\/p>\n<p>The symptoms in many ways mirror those reported from the novel coronavirus \u2014 with sufferers reporting fevers, headaches, coughing and shortness of breath.<\/p>\n<p>One patient likened it to \u201ca tight band around my chest and a pillow over my face,\u201d the CDC said.<\/p>\n<p>That is almost identical to what those with COVID-19 have reported, with\u00a0Rep. Ben McAdams recently saying\u00a0he \u201cfelt like I had a belt around my chest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome became a \u201cnationally notifiable disease\u201d in the US in 1995, but there have been no known cases transmitted between people, the health group says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Chile and Argentina, rare cases of person-to-person transmission have occurred\u201d in the case of one strand named Andes virus, the CDC says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no specific treatment, cure, or vaccine for hantavirus infection,\u201d the CDC warned, saying patients often need intensive care to \u201chelp them through the period of severe respiratory distress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, if you have been around rodents and have symptoms of fever, deep muscle aches, and severe shortness of breath, see your doctor immediately,\u201d it warns.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A passenger who died on a bus in China has tested positive for a completely different virus than\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0\u2014 one more fatal that often produces very similar symptoms, according to state-run media.
