The public health institute recommends \u201cwashing hands with soap and water whenever possible because handwashing reduces the amounts of all types of germs and chemicals on hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Popular sanitizer brands have all but sold out on websites like Amazon, and a Rite Aid store in Brooklyn was completely cleared of hand sanitizers this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUltimately, I don\u2019t think the panic of sanitizers is warranted,\u201d Dr. David Dowdy, an associate professor of infectious disease and epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University\u2019s Bloomberg School of Public Health, tells The Post, adding that he uses hand sanitizers when seeing patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is less because the sanitizers are unlikely to be effective against the coronavirus \u2014 they probably are effective, though they haven\u2019t been proven and don\u2019t offer long-lasting protection \u2014 more because the current risk of infection by the coronavirus in the USA is exceedingly small.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The global market for hand sanitizers, which pulled in $2.4 billion dollars in 2017, is predicted to reach $5.5 billion by 2024, according to Marketwatch.<\/p>\n<p>At Brooklyn\u2019s Caf\u00e9 Regular in Park Slope, the debate raged. \u201cHand sanitizers may help, but I\u2019m not sure,\u201d says Dr. Arthur Kaplowitz. \u201cI would have to see the studies. Touching your eyes and nose is certainly self-inoculation.\u201d Still, whether or not he\u2019s certain about them working, he says he does carry a small bottle of CVS-branded sanitizer in his pocket.<\/p>\n\n<p>Marty Goldensohn, a producer and former news director at WNYC, listens to the advice of his daughter, also a doctor. \u201cShe advises singing \u2018Happy Birthday\u2019 twice while washing with soapy water,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s about 30 seconds if you don\u2019t sing too fast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Call it the Purell panic.
