Half the people probably haven\u2019t been here!\u201d said Carmen, 52, of The Bronx.<\/p>\n<p>The study surveyed 2,000 adults online about the rudest city in the country. New York finished first going away.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles came in a distant second with 19.7 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Residents of Washington, DC, were rated the third-surliest, followed by Chicago, Boston, Detroit, Buffalo, Baltimore, Philadelphia and San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>Big Apple denizens, who spend life jammed against 9 million of their neighbors, are occasionally known to be short on patience with slow-walking tourists.<\/p>\n<p>But visitors have long seen locals as the real problem.<\/p>\n<p>When John Adams visited the city in 1774, he wrote in his diary: \u201cWith all the opulence and splendor of this city, there is very little good breeding to be found.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have not seen one real gentleman, one well-bred man, since I came to town,\u201d he continued, the New York Times once \u00adreported.<\/p>\n<p>One man visiting from Florida on Monday agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHell, yeah, everybody here\u2019s an a\u2013hole!\u201d said the Floridian, who refused to give his name.<\/p>\n<p>But Harlem man Sergio Villanueva, 26, suggested people in New Jersey are \u201cmuch ruder\u201d than New Yorkers.<\/p>\n<p>Villanueva admitted New Yorkers can be rude, but insisted \u201cit\u2019s not personal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike, we don\u2019t mean anything by it. It\u2019s just the way we live,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople got places to be, people to see. If I bump into you, sorry \u2026 but not really.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many others agreed that we\u2019re just misunderstood.<\/p>\n<p>Madison Scott, 27, moved from California to New York two years ago and insisted her new neighbors have hearts of gold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not outgoing or super friendly but I remember I was on the train and some guy just started puking everywhere and a lot of people just started handing him napkins and water bottles,\u201d she said, recalling one moment of Big Apple \u00adcamaraderie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re kind of gruff,\u201d added Long Island resident Rachael Sullivan, 21, \u201cbut we\u2019re kind-hearted when you get to know us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Harlem, Diane Powell, 36, dismissed rude New Yorkers as a \u201cstereotype.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re just strong-willed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>But some admitted New Yorkers can <em>occasionally <\/em>get a bit short around the holiday season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople don\u2019t care if you\u2019re a child, old, elderly, they\u2019re just like shopping. They\u2019re just like, \u2018Get out of my way,\u2019\u2009\u201d said Jessica \u00adTejada, 26, of Manhattan while shopping at Macy\u2019s with her family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew York is awful. We\u2019re crowded. We\u2019re like sardines because we\u2019re just trapped together all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the holidays, workers are worse.
