Mendel\u2019s creative director Gilles Mendel told Page Six Style of working with the pop star.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cShe always comes to me with an idea; in this case, the theme was pastel colors and soft tones. Luckily, my recent spring collection was very much about those tones, these beautiful pale citrus colors. So we started with my spring palette, and from there, we built up the dress. Taylor wanted a really ethereal, hand-pleated moment, which is something we\u2019ve always done so well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The primary challenge of creating Swift\u2019s outfit? Since she was set to perform an acoustic set at the gala, she needed a way to ensure her arms would be free to strum her guitar and play the piano without being encumbered by extra fabric. And as it turns out, it was Swift herself who came up with the solution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat bolero didn\u2019t come from me \u2014 it was her,\u201d Mendel revealed. \u201cShe had the vision of having some sort of cover that would give it a different volume than just a basic dress. So we developed, with our Gilles Mendel touch, this little hand-pleated, silk- sleeved bolero cover that I thought came out really stunning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Best of all, the billowy-sleeved piece made Swift\u2019s look convertible, so she could make a dramatic entrance on the red carpet and then shed it before she took the stage later in the evening.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-60575\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/taylor-swift-time-100-gala-2019-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/taylor-swift-time-100-gala-2019-2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/taylor-swift-time-100-gala-2019-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love to design for people who perform,\u201d the designer, who has created costumes for the New York City Ballet, explained. \u201cIt\u2019s always a challenge, and it\u2019s fun, to give someone the freedom of movement that\u2019s so important for their art. The concept she brought to me \u2014 creating volume out of a super-soft, drape-y material \u2014 is a very complicated task, but it\u2019s great to work with Taylor because she always pushes us, as designers, to bring out our best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>And there\u2019s good news for fans eager to shop Swift\u2019s Time 100 ensemble for themselves. \u201cI\u2019ve never duplicated any of the dresses I\u2019ve done for her,\u201d Mendel said. \u201cI\u2019ve been with her twice to the Met Gala, and those two gowns are still in my archives.
