After proving doubters wrong and successfully headlining two Batman<\/em> films for director Tim Burton, Michael Keaton stepped aside for Joel Schumacher\u2019s 1995 threequel, Batman Forever<\/em>. More than 20 years later, Keaton isn\u2019t shy about why he decided to hand over the DC Comics superhero\u2019s cowl to Val Kilmer.<\/p>\n

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>, Keaton bluntly admits he wasn\u2019t on board with Schumacher\u2019s plan to give the third film a lighter, goofier tone, and doesn\u2019t sugarcoat his feelings about the script for Batman Forever<\/em> that he was shown:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt sucked. The script never was good. I couldn\u2019t understand why he wanted to do what he wanted to do. I hung on for many meetings. I knew it was in trouble when he [Joel Schumacher] said, \u2018Why does everything have to be so dark?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Keaton has bad-mouthed Batman<\/em> Forever<\/em> \u2014 per Screen Rant<\/em>, in a 2014 appearance on CBS Sunday Morning<\/em>, Keaton said he turned his back on the lucrative ($15 million) payday because \u201cit sucked\u2026Yeah, it was just awful!\u201d Keaton\u2019s lack of interest in a more jovial, carefree version of Batman is hardly a surprise, given that he\u2019s long expressed his pride in his two superhero collaborations with Burton.<\/p>\n

Though Schumacher has recently stated that he originally wanted his second Batman film, 1997\u2019s disastrous Batman & Robin,<\/em> with George Clooney as the Caped Crusader, to be \u201cvery dark,\u201d the campy direction in which he took the character in his films led to a long Caped Crusader hiatus, setting the stage for Christopher Nolan\u2019s wildly popular gritty reinvention in the Dark Knight<\/em> trilogy starring Christian Bale. So, in a long-winded sort of way, we can at least credit Schumacher for the latest spate of superior big-screen Batman movies, including last year\u2019s much-maligned but commercially successful Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/em>, which was bolstered by Ben Affleck\u2019s generally praised turn as the Gotham City vigilante.<\/p>\n
