Shirts emblazoned with Looney Tunes illustrations and Backstreet Boys tour gear (priced anywhere from $45 to $150) are flying off the shelves, according to vintage fashion experts. There are several strategies to ensure a pre-loved T-shirt is worth the dough, such as finding authentic original details and examining its structural integrity.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re budget is $10 or $100, it\u2019s an effort that pays off.<\/p>\n<p>A spot-on choice \u201cmakes you stand out immediately,\u201d says Voland.<\/p>\n<p>Read on for expert tips to help you separate the cheap pieces from the truly cool throwbacks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e3lan e3lan-in-post1\"><\/div>\n\n<p><strong>Figure out its age<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>T-shirts haven\u2019t always been made the same way, or with the same materials. First things first, give the shirt a feel and check to see if the tags indicate what kind of fabric it is.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201990s brought an onset of 100-percent heavyweight cotton tees, which feel thick and have a boxy, \u201cbaggier silhouette,\u201d says Callan Clendenin, a manager at Beacon\u2019s Closet in Greenpoint.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for something from the \u201970s or the \u201980s, you\u2019ll want to make sure the shirt was made with a 50-50 blend of cotton and polyester. Not only will these fabrics feel softer, but they\u2019ll also generally be more threadbare, as washes through the years have likely dissolved the cotton and left the polyester behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Those] are the ones that will be buttery and see-through,\u201d says Voland. The 100-percent cotton shirts, he adds, will see their colors fade with age and washes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59710\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/we46.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"585\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/we46.jpg 585w, https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/we46-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\" \/><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13648722\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Justin Goellner, Buffalo Exchange manager<span class=\"credit\">Tamara Beckwith<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then take a peek at the seams on the bottom and the shoulders. If those are all stitched with a single seam, that means it\u2019s a genuine shirt from the \u201970s or the \u201980s. Between the late \u201980s and early \u201990s, those areas got double-stitched for greater durability. Only in the 2000s did manufacturers add seams down the sides of the torso; if you see those, it\u2019s not a genuine vintage garment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"e3lan e3lan-in-post1\"><\/div>\n\n<p>It may seem tedious, but this process shouldn\u2019t take long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you give it five minutes, you\u2019re probably set,\u201d says Justin Goellner, 40, a store manager at the Buffalo Exchange in Chelsea.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Embrace its flaws, but be vigilant<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cImperfect is better,\u201d says Voland of what gives a vintage tee an It factor. \u201cIt just has to be perfect for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59711\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/vintage-shirts-745.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"590\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/vintage-shirts-745.jpg 590w, https:\/\/www.thefastfashion.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/vintage-shirts-745-300x275.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, an older piece might have edge to it. That can mean small holes, cracked graphics, even a stretched collar.
