    After a tough match against Ashleigh Barty, world no. 1 Angelique Kerber continues her quest for a first Brisbane International title as she takes on Elina Svitolina for a place in the semifina<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    World no. 1 Angelique Kerber takes on the dangerous Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International on Thursday.<\/div>\n

    Kerber returned to action on Wednesday when she played her first match of 2017 against Ashleigh Barty in what turned out to be a three-set thriller. Barty, who recently returned from an absence of over a year after struggling with the pressures of tennis and briefly took up professional cricket in the interim, is currently ranked world no. 271 but the 20-year-old is a formidable ballstriker and she tested Kerber to the limit for two sets before fading away in the third. <\/div>\n

    It was a formidable workout for the world no. 1 in just her first match back and Kerber, although she said she wished she had served better, will have been pleased to have been so tested at the start of the season.<\/div>\n

    \u2018It’s always tough to play a match after such a long break, and Ashleigh was playing very well from the first point,\u2019 Kerber said. \u2018It’s always different starting the year, and the first matches are always tough. You have to get again into the rhythm and play a lot of matches to feel your game.\u2019<\/div>\n

    \u2018Working hard and playing like she did tonight I’m sure she will have great results,\u2019 Kerber added. \u2018She played so well straight from the first point tonight.\u2019<\/div>\n

    This is Kerber\u2019s fifth appearance at the Premier-level Brisbane International, where she had her best result in 2016, finishing runner-up to Victoria Azarenka. At the time it seemed a fairly unremarkable result, but it set the German left-hander up for her run at the Australian Open, when she stunned the in-form Azarenka in the quarterfinals before beating Serena Williams in three sets in the final to claim her maiden Grand Slam title. Kerber would win her second, at the US Open, before the year was out to dethrone Williams as the world no. 1, claim the Stuttgart title on home soil and finish runner-up at Wimbledon, the Olympics, in Cincinnati and at the WTA Finals Singapore. <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    It was a truly remarkable season and now Kerber faces the unenviable task of backing it up, with a mammoth amount of points to defend throughout the season. A deep run in Brisbane would be just what the doctor ordered in terms of confidence as the German prepares for the Australian Open.<\/div>\n

    Next up for the top seed is Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals. The Ukrainian, currently ranked world no. 14, has been inching her way up the rankings steadily in the past couple of seasons and is nicely established in the top 20 as 2017 begins.<\/div>\n

    Svitolina\u2019s career so far mirrors the nature of her game \u2013 solid, consistent, but not eye-catching. A quarterfinalist at the French Open in 2015, Svitolina wasn\u2019t able to back up that result in 2016, which was the fourth year in a row that she has won an International-level WTA Tour title (Kuala Lumpur, this time). Last season was the best of her career, although she made no impression at any Grand Slams, because she reached the biggest final of her career so far at the Premier-level Connecticut Open in New Haven as well as semifinals in Dubai, Tokyo, Moscow and at the Premier Mandatory tournament in Beijing, the China Open.<\/div>\n

    Svitolina also finished runner-up to Petra Kvitova at the second-tier season-ending championships in Zhuhai and won not one, but two matches against players ranked world no. 1 \u2013 a shock victory over Serena Williams at the Rio Olympics, where Svitolina reached the quarterfinals, and a 6-3, 7-5 win over Kerber herself in Beijing.<\/div>\n

    That was the third match Svitolina has won against Kerber in eight meetings, with the Ukrainian winning back-to-back hard-court encounters at Wuhan in 2014 and Brisbane itself in 2015. It seems slightly surprising that Svitolina has had this measure of success against Kerber, when the Ukrainian doesn\u2019t have the weapons to overpower or hit through the German, but Svitolina\u2019s dogged retrieving and consistency from the baseline is clearly a difficult prospect for Kerber when she isn\u2019t playing her best. With the match against Barty a fine warm-up for tougher tests, however, one suspects that it will be the world no. 1 who comes through to the semifinals in Brisbane for the second time. <\/div>\n
