Gospel singer Kim Burrell has faced criticism from the entertainment industry after video footage surfaced in which she gives a \u201chomophobic\u201d sermon.<\/p>\n
The singer, whose vocals appeared on Frank Ocean\u2019s song Godspeed, is shown in a video giving a sermon that refers to \u201cthe perverted homosexual spirit\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat perverted homosexual spirit is a spirit of delusion and confusion and has deceived many men and women, and it has caused a strain on the body of Christ,\u201d Burrell, a pastor at Love and Liberty Fellowship Church in Houston, Texas, said in the video which surfaced online on 30 December. It is unclear when the footage was filmed.<\/p>\n
The singer, who was due to sing with Pharrell Williams and Janelle Mon\u00e1e on the Ellen DeGeneres Show this week, has now been dropped. \u201cFor those asking, Kim Burrell will not be appearing on my show,\u201d read a tweet from the presenter on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Following the circulation online of the video of the sermon, Frank Ocean\u2019s mother, Katonya Breaux, tweeted: \u201cSon, can we crop Kim Burrell\u2019s voice out of your song?\u201d<\/p>\n
Pharrell, meanwhile, posted on Twitter: \u201cI condemn hate speech of any kind\u201d, although he did not refer to Burrell. Mon\u00e1e reposted his message, also stating: \u201cI unequivocally repudiate any and all hateful comments against the LGBTQ community. Actually I\u2019m tired of that label. We all belong to the same community, a shared community called humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Burrell, who has collaborated with artists such as Missy Elliott, R Kelly, Stevie Wonder and George Clinton, has since responded to the leaked footage on a Facebook Live broadcast, claiming that the \u201cenemy\u201d had posted only a select extract of the original speech. \u201cI love you and God loves you but God hates the sin in you and me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI never said all gays were going to hell. I never said LGBT \u2026 I said \u2018sin\u2019,\u201d she added. \u201cI make no excuses or apologies. My love is as pure as it comes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
