New Jersey residents are on the outs with their state.<\/p>\n

More people moved out of the Garden State in 2018 than any other state, according to a new study by United Van Lines \u2013 though New York wasn\u2019t far behind.<\/p>\n

New Jersey, which topped the list of the \u201cmost moved from\u201d states, was followed by Illinois, Connecticut and the Empire State, the moving company\u2019s study found.<\/p>\n

The St. Louis-based company on Wednesday released its 42nd annual National Movers Study, which tracks customers\u2019 state-to-state migration patterns.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Northeast region continues to see more residents leaving than moving in, with 57 percent of all moves within the Northeast US being outbound moves,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n

The study found that 66.8 percent of New Jersey moves were \u201coutbound.\u201d The percentages were 65.9 in Illinois, 62 in Connecticut, 61.5 in New York and 58.7 in Kansas, according to the study.<\/p>\n

Ohio, Massachusetts, Iowa, Montana and Michigan rounded out the list of the \u201cmost moved from\u201d states.<\/p>\n

Vermont \u2013 whose population is the second-smallest in the nation \u2014 was the only Northeast state that made the \u201cmost moved to\u201d list, topping the list with 72.6 percent of its movers making inbound migrations.<\/p>\n

Four Western states filled out the top 5 \u201cmoved to\u201d list \u2014 Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and Arizona.<\/p>\n

The Carolinas, Washington, South Dakota and the District of Columbia almost made the top inbound list.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe data collected by United Van Lines aligns with longer-term migration patterns to southern and western states, trends driven by factors like job growth, lower costs of living, state budgetary challenges and more temperate climates,\u201d said Michael Stoll, economist and professor in the Department of Public Policy at UCLA.<\/p>\n
