The artist who painted a 4-story-tall penis on a Lower East Side building is crying censorship because it was painted over.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe pieces were commissioned by [Lower East Side art group] The New Allen,\u201d Swedish artist Carolina Falkholt told The Post through a Facebook message after her mural was covered up in gray paint by the building\u2019s owner. \u201cAs a trained graffiti writer I am used to my work being censored in different contexts.\u201d<\/p>\n
She painted the 40-foot-tall member on the side of 303 Broome St. on Christmas Eve. It grossed out neighbors for three days before it was taken down Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n
Building owner Samy Mahfar of SMA Equities said Thursday that he never sanctioned the schvantz.<\/p>\n
\u201cAbsolutely not,\u201d said Mahfar, adding he never had contact with Falkholt. \u201cNone. Zero. Absolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n
Someone from the neighborhood sent him a message alerting him about it Dec. 26 \u2014 more than a day after it had been completed, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was shocked. It\u2019s not good,\u201d Mahfar continued. \u201cWe are very conscious of the neighborhood we do business in. It was just not the right thing, so we covered it as soon as possible. To be honest, I was extremely offended. It was very offensive.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe woke up the day after Christmas and someone emailed me that this happened and \u2026 right away we got someone as quickly as possible to cover it up,\u201d Mahfar, who said he is out of town but declined to say where, told The Post by phone.<\/p>\n
Mahfar said he is \u201ctalking\u201d with police. And cops are considering felony criminal-mischief charges, a high-ranking NYPD source said.<\/p>\n
The New Allen co-founder Milan Kelez told art blog Hyper Allergic that the work was a collaboration with The New Museum for its ongoing exhibition, \u201cTrigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon\u201d \u2014 but the museum told the blog it has no affiliation with the giant penis mural.<\/p>\n
Kelez did not say whether Mahfar OK\u2019d the masterpiece, and he did not respond to multiple requests for comment from The Post.<\/p>\n
Falkholt said she was trying to promote body positivity and argued \u201cTalking about these subjects in public space is a must for a healthy, nonviolent community\/world.\u201d<\/p>\n
