Ricki-Lee Coulter<\/strong> isn’t one to get caught up in the fear of failure.<\/p>\n

“I’ve had to start over again so many times in my life,” the 31-year-old singer tells TheFIX. “Whether it was getting divorced at 21, or cutting ties with my management because I knew they were screwing me over.”<\/p>\n

Still, she admits it took her years to harness that fighting spirit.<\/p>\n

“I’m such a people pleaser,” she says. “I don’t like confrontation, and as a result I’ve stayed in things at the expense of my own happiness for too long.”<\/p>\n

With new music out this month, Ricki-Lee is moving away from her pop roots and stripping back. It’s a departure that’s taught her more about herself than she ever anticipated.<\/p>\n

“As a creative person, I always want to heighten everything and see everything in this beautiful way,” she explains.”But while I was writing [my new single] ‘Not Too Late’, I realised that I had to forget about trying to package everything up and present it with a bow — because the most powerful thing is the raw truth.”<\/p>\n

The singer — who found fame on the second season of Australian Idol <\/em>in 2001 — recently returned home to Sydney after a two-year stint in Los Angeles with her manager husband Richard Harrison.<\/p>\n

Her return comes at a sombre time in the Australian political sphere, as the nation awaits the results of the same-sex marriage postal vote.  <\/p>\n

“I’m so ashamed that we live in a country that this isn’t law,” Ricki-Lee says. “I’m disgusted — sick to my stomach.”<\/p>\n
