Kate Beckinsale is proud that her tenure as the death-dealing vampire Selene in the Underworld<\/em> saga helped turn the tide for female-led action franchises. The 44-year-old actress remembers that throughout its development, the series, launched in 2003, faced questions over its financial viability because the hero had double-X chromosomes.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd now, for my daughter\u2019s generation, they\u2019re not questioning that at all,\u201d Beckinsale told Yahoo Movies at the Los Angeles press day for her new drama, The Only Living Boy in New York<\/em>. \u201cYou know, Wonder Woman<\/em> smacked everybody at the box office\u2026. That\u2019s normal to them and that feels like a short period of time for quite a big change. It\u2019s nice to have been part of moving that needle. It\u2019s nice to have that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wonder Woman<\/em> muscled past the $400 million mark Tuesday at the domestic box office \u2014 an increasingly difficult feat for any film to achieve in North America.<\/p>\n

There was a time shortly after her Underworld<\/em> bow that Beckinsale could have played Wonder Woman, too. The Londoner\u2019s name was perennially in the mix for the golden lasso in the mid-2000s as Warner Bros. attempted to bring Diana Prince to the big screen , most notably in a version that would have been written and directed by Joss Whedon.<\/p>\n

Her casting was buoyed by speculation, rumors, and our capacity in 2006 to still be susceptible to online April Fool\u2019s pranks , but Beckinsale confirmed she was at least reading what Warners was selling.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut the incarnations that I was seeing were\u2026\u201d Beckinsale trails off, however. If we had to do our speculating, we would\u2019ve guessed the next word would have been an expletive. \u201cThey weren\u2019t this one [the 2017 film].\u201d<\/p>\n

There was also the matter of Beckinsale not exactly yearning for another skin-tight heroine\u2019s suit. \u201cI don\u2019t know if I was desperate to be in a leotard. I\u2019d already done the rubber trousers,\u201d she said. \u201cYou have to take in that you have a child at some point and how much could you possibly embarrass them.\u201d (Beckinsale\u2019s daughter, Lily, was born in 1999.)<\/p>\n

We wondered out loud if it wouldn\u2019t be a cool claim to call your mother Wonder Woman. \u201cThat\u2019s such an oppressive thing,\u201d Beckinsale countered before adding with a laugh: \u201cIf your mother is Wonder Woman, you\u2019re gonna have issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beckinsale is aware of all the fan art that was created over the years imagining her in the role. \u201cThere\u2019s also a very big alternate universe where I\u2019m Catwoman. There\u2019s a lot of that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

But that actress doesn\u2019t appear fully at ease with the type of adulation that comes from fan armies of Comic-Con-centric fare. \u201cI was just at some comic convention the other weekend, and the number of people who\u2019ve got a tattoo of my face, I mean, what an extraordinary commitment,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s the wildest thing, especially because I grew up not expecting to do movies like this one. That is a real head-spinner. Like yeah, I think that\u2019s good?<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes you want to apologize for some reason, like, \u2018Oh, god, I\u2019m so sorry, what have you done that for?’\u201d One fan even had Beckinsale sign underneath a tattoo, then subsequently turned that signature into a tat. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize that they were going to get that tattooed as well otherwise I would\u2019ve done much neater handwriting,\u201d she laughed.<\/p>\n

Beckinsale wrapped up her four-film, decade-and-a-half run as Selene with last year\u2019s Underworld: Blood Wars<\/em> but says she\u2019d be game for more action\u2026 even if she detests to what it takes to stay in action shape. \u201cI always am [in shape]. But you know you get a little but more anxious if you\u2019ve got a skin-tight suit and got to jump off a building. You step up the cardio a bit,\u201d she said. \u201cI hate working out by the way, I hate it. I like sitting down and reading.\u201d<\/p>\n
