Civil political discourse took a beating in West Virginia this weekend when a Democratic senator profanely proclaimed that he was going to vote the way he wanted and didn\u2019t \u201cgive a s\u2013t\u201d if it cost him his seat.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t give a s\u2013t, you understand? I just don\u2019t give a s\u2013t,\u201d Sen. Joe Manchin told the Charleston Gazette-Mail on Sunday, saying he wasn\u2019t going to toe his party\u2019s line on every issue.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t care if I get elected, don\u2019t care if I get defeated, how about that. If they think because I\u2019m up for election, that I can be wrangled into voting for s\u2013t that I don\u2019t like and can\u2019t explain, they\u2019re all crazy,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not scared of an election, let\u2019s put it that way. Elections do not bother me or scare me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m going to continue to do the same thing I\u2019ve always done, extremely independent.\u201d

President Trump won West Virginia by a mile, and Democratic Gov. Jim Justice pointedly switched teams and joined the GOP at a Trump campaign rally in the state last week.<\/p>\n
Manchin\u2019s angry comments followed a slam from GOP senatorial candidate Patrick Morrisey, who called for the incumbent to resign from the Democratic leadership.<\/p>\n
Morrisey cited Manchin\u2019s refusal to sign onto a letter establishing Democrats\u2019 three main policy points on tax reform, The Hill reported.<\/p>\n
Manchin was one of three Democrats in the Senate who didn\u2019t sign the letter.<\/p>\n
He explained that he agreed with the party platform but wanted party leaders to get Republicans on board.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe bottom line is, if it doesn\u2019t help West Virginia, it doesn\u2019t make sense to me, and just because there\u2019s an election doesn\u2019t mean I sign on or don\u2019t sign on,\u201d Manchin told the Gazette-Mail.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you look at all the time I\u2019ve been here, there\u2019s stuff I don\u2019t sign on to. I just don\u2019t think it\u2019s a good way to do business when you don\u2019t try to get people from the front end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
