City officials earlier this month&nbsp;released police and medical reportsproviding details about the investigation into Cornell\u2019s&nbsp;May 18 hanging&nbsp;in Room 1136 of the MGM Grand Hotel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">That only prompted more questions \u2014 but Detroit Police investigator Charles Weaver told The Detroit News there are simple explanations for the perceived anomalies in the case.<\/p>\n<div class=\"story-asset oembed-asset\" id=\"module-position-QIMxvZfHRQY\">\n<div class=\"story-oembed-wrap \">\n<div class=\"js-oembed story-oembed story-oembed-detroit-news story-oembed-type-link\" data-oembed-provider=\"detroit-news\" data-oembed-type=\"link\">\n<div class=\"oembed-asset oembed-asset-link oembed-asset-detroit-news oembed-simple-link-container\">\n<p class=\"oembed-link-desc\">Police: DNA not sent to lab in Cornell death<\/p>\n<div>&nbsp;For instance, Weaver checked a box in his report stating Cornell\u2019s cellphone wasn\u2019t recovered, sparking widespread questions about what happened to it. Weaver said that only means the phone wasn\u2019t taken into evidence.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cThe phone wasn\u2019t recovered; it was returned to Mrs. Cornell,\u201d Weaver said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Speculation that Cornell was slain has been rampant \u2014 and Thursday\u2019s hanging&nbsp;death of Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington&nbsp;has fueled online claims that something sinister is afoot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Bennington died on what would have been Cornell\u2019s 53rd birthday. He was a close friend of Cornell\u2019s and the godfather of his son. Bennington sang at Cornell\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Fans, many of whom were already convinced Cornell\u2019s death wasn\u2019t self-inflicted, insist the timing of Bennington\u2019s death is no coincidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cThere is some kind of connection,\u201d said fan Brenda Gill. \u201cSomething is for sure going on &#8230; (there\u2019s) some connection with Chester killing himself and being a close friend of Chris.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">After Cornell wrapped up a show at the Fox Theatre on May 17, his bodyguard, Martin Kirsten, reportedly called hotel security to report the rock star\u2019s wife, Vicky, had asked him to check on her husband. She was concerned after talking to Cornell on the phone, and because he had not responded when she called back, Kirsten told investigators.<\/p>\n<div class=\"partner-placement partner-spike\" id=\"ad-position-178\" data-monetization-sizes=\"fluid,3,3\" data-monetization-id=\"native-article_link\">&nbsp;<div class=\"e3lan e3lan-in-post1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The bodyguard&nbsp;told Weaver&nbsp;he had given Cornell two sleeping pills in the singer\u2019s room and gone back to his own room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">A short time later, Cornell called Kirsten and said his Apple TV wasn\u2019t working. The bodyguard told the detective he arranged for a hotel employee to bring the remote needed to access the hotel\u2019s network at \u201caround 11:34 p.m.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">According to a&nbsp;police report,&nbsp;Kirsten went back to Cornell\u2019s room at 12:15 a.m. According to the report, an MGM medic arrived at 12:56 a.m. and began CPR.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">It\u2019s unclear how long it took Kirsten to gain entry to Cornell\u2019s room, although Weaver said he watched surveillance video of the bodyguard kicking the door open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cEverything happened like he said it did,\u201d Weaver said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Kirsten told police when he tried to get into the room with his key card, he found the door locked from the inside. He said he called security, who denied him access to the room, so Kirsten said he kicked the door open.<\/p>\n<div class=\"partner-outstream partner-placement-visible\" id=\"ad-position-169\">\n<div class=\"ad-slot\" id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-outstream_video-news-local-communities_detroitcity-171\" data-google-query-id=\"CN-zy6DmoNUCFRVtvQod40IKoA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_7103\/mi-detroit-C1561\/outstream_video\/news\/local\/communities_detroitcity_3__container__\"><iframe name=\"google_ads_iframe_7103\/mi-detroit-C1561\/outstream_video\/news\/local\/communities_detroitcity_3\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" title=\"3rd party ad content\" id=\"google_ads_iframe_7103\/mi-detroit-C1561\/outstream_video\/news\/local\/communities_detroitcity_3\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\" data-integralas-id-d6f67bb7-de5f-7907-3db9-733881919829=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">When Kirsten found a door to the suite was also locked, he told police he alerted security again, and again kicked open the door when security refused to let him inside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">That prompted many to ask why hotel security wouldn\u2019t let Kirsten into the room after he said Cornell\u2019s wife was concerned for her husband\u2019s well-being.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">But hotel security staff rarely grant access to a guest\u2019s room unless there\u2019s convincing evidence of a medical emergency, said Daniel Kennedy, who teaches criminal justice and security administration at Oakland University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cHaving someone\u2019s wife say she\u2019s concerned isn\u2019t enough,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you go barging into someone\u2019s room because his wife called and find him in bed with another woman, you\u2019re setting yourself up for a lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cThere has to be convincing evidence there\u2019s an emergency, and someone saying they\u2019re concerned doesn\u2019t meet that criteria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Law enforcement and medical experts say many of the questions about Cornell\u2019s death stem from a misunderstanding of how investigations are conducted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">For instance, fans have pointed to alleged police scanner audio posted online in which an emergency technician is heard reporting Cornell had a wound on the back of his head. The News could not verify the authenticity of the audio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">But even if the audio is authentic, law enforcement and medical experts say information gleaned from police scanner traffic is often unreliable, since it\u2019s the initial impressions of first responders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Cornell\u2019s autopsy, performed by the Wayne County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office, did not mention a head wound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cMaybe somebody spoke too soon; it happens,\u201d said longtime pathologist Cyril Wecht, former medical examiner of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and chairman of the American Board of Legal Medicine board of trustees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cIf the head wound is not written up in the report or the autopsy, there\u2019s your answer,\u201d Wecht said. \u201cIt was most likely a simple mistake by the EMT.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Wecht has been consulted in a number of high-profile deaths, most famously as the first civilian allowed to examine evidence at the National Archives on the assassination of President John F. Stay informed with\u00a0<em>travel news<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>updates<\/em><\/li>\r\n \t\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\n\n<p class=\"p-text\">Weaver also stressed: \u201cThere was no head wound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Questions persist by some about the quick sequence of events between the end of the show and Kirsten\u2019s attempt to enter Cornell\u2019s room about an hour later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Soundgarden fan Tony Bassett, who attended the show, estimated it ended between 11:15 and 11:20 p.m. Although some fans have posted on social media that Cornell acted strangely during the concert, Bassett said he seemed normal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cI thought it was a great show; I can\u2019t tell you he was acting any stranger than he always does,\u201d said Bassett, who described himself as a \u201cSoundgarden fan since the late \u201980s, before anyone knew who they were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Bassett said his son is also a fan of the band. \u201cI was going to take him to the show as an early 18th birthday present, but his high school baseball team had a makeup game, and he had to play,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cI told him, \u2018Don\u2019t worry; I\u2019ll get you to another show.\u2019 But there won\u2019t be any more shows.
