Ariel Winter isn\u2019t about that unrealistic \u201cbeach body\u201d ideal.<\/p>\n

The 19-year-old actress recently sat down with <\/span>Refinery29 <\/span>to discuss her role as Alex on \u201cModern Family,\u201d how she\u2019s dealt with critics in her rise to fame and her journey to self-acceptance and body love. The interview is part of R29\u2019s new <\/span>Take Back The Beach <\/span>series, which debunks the dreaded notion that a woman needs a \u201cbeach body\u201d (i.e. a thin body that conforms to often unachieavable standards of standards of beauty) in order to happily wear swimsuits in the summer. <\/p>\n

Winter told R29 that loving your body all the time<\/em> <\/span>is hard work and that\u2019s OK; the beach \u201cshould be a safe space\u201d either way, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to be positive about your body all the time,\u201d she said. \u201cI know because I\u2019m honest about my insecurities that people think I\u2019m 100 percent positive about my body all the time, but I\u2019m not. I get really uncomfortable, too. But I just remind myself that this is the body I was given. This is who I am.\u201d <\/p>\n

The \u201cModern Family\u201d actress also spoke about body positivity in the context of the Trump administration. President Trump is <\/span>notorious for objectifying women: He fat-shamed a former Miss Universe and <\/span>called her \u201cMiss Piggy;\u201d he said that a woman <\/span>must be attractive <\/span>in order to be a journalist; and he\u2019s also openly fat-shamed and criticized <\/span>multiple famous women <\/span>for their looks and weight. <\/p>\n

\u201cOur leadership is really anti-women right now,\u201d Winter told R29. \u201cThanks to Donald Trump, we\u2019re being objectified and made to feel bad about ourselves, so I think it\u2019s really important for women to stick together and do the opposite of that; to let their bodies be seen and be heard, and to empower each other; to remind each other that what they look like is not the only thing that\u2019s important when it comes to who they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

And unfortunately, the young actress knows all too well what it\u2019s like to be objectified by critics. Winter has been the target of <\/span>relentless body-shaming, whether it\u2019s about wearing <\/span>revealing dresses <\/span>or her breast reduction scars.<\/p>\n
