Three Girls will air across three consecutive nights on BBC One, beginning Tuesday, 16 May<\/span><\/p>\n

A harrowing new drama series, <\/span>Three Girls, begins on BBC One on Tuesday night which is based on the shocking true story of the young victims of the Rochdale child sexual exploitation ring and how they were let down by authorities.<\/p>\n

It was one of the most horrifying stories of recent times; the tale of how vulnerable teenagers had been preyed on by a group of middle aged men and those in power failing to act to stop the abuse despite multiple pleas for help.<\/p>\n

Three Girls was made with the full support of the victims and their families and details how the young women were plied with alcohol and drugs before being abused, why their calls for aid were initially ignored by authorities, and how their horrifying world was eventually blown open thanks to the work of Sara Rowbotham.<\/p>\n

Authorities were then forced to apologise for failing to stop the abuse sooner.<\/p>\n

What happened in Rochdale?<\/h3>\n

The drama focuses on the events of 2008 to 2012 and the true experiences of three young girls: sisters Ruby and Amber, and their friend Holly. All their names have been changed to protect their identities.<\/p>\n

All three girls \u2013 aged 13 to 15 \u2013 were abused over several years and all became pregnant.<\/p>\n

Amber was forced to help snare other young victims.<\/p>\n

Ruby, who has learning difficulties, fell pregnant at 13 after sex with a 42 year old man and then had an abortion; at trial she spoke about the man being her friend, even after the sex abuse ring had been uncovered.<\/p>\n

Almost 50 young girls were abused in total.<\/p>\n

Three Girls will detail how a group of middle aged men, mostly Pakistani in origin, were responsible for the horrific grooming, abuse and trafficking of multiple girls, and how they plied their victims with alcohol and drugs in a bid to make them more compliant.<\/p>\n
