Ashley Graham gets \u201cvery candid\u201d in her new book, \u201cA New Model: What Confidence, Beauty and Power Really Look Like,\u201d about the fat-shaming she said she endured at home in her youth.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really believe that parents need to know that they are shaping the future of their children,\u201d Graham, 29, said on \u201cGood Morning America.” \u201cWords have power. The things that you say to yourself as a parent, even the things that you say maybe just one time to your children; they take it, and they take it into their real world and their life and beyond. And I wanted to get candid because I want to be a better parent than what I had.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the book, available today, she recalled her father\u2019s \u201cconstant criticism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cConstant criticism — that was my dad through and through,\u201d she began, in part. \u201cMy father was a master of the cutting insult. His nickname for me was, \u2018Duh,\u2019 because he didn’t think I was very smart.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe worst I ever felt in my entire career was when, a few years into my career, my dad agreed with my new agent, who said I needed to \u2018tighten up.\u2019 \u2026 I was sobbing because my dad thought I should <\/span>lose weight,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

Ashley Graham said she and her mom, on the other hand, are \u201cbest friends to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom was absolutely amazing. Her and I are still best friends to this day,\u201d she explained. \u201cI still think that the next generation should be better and better. That\u2019s why I wanted to share my story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ashley Graham also defended her mother in the book, saying she tried to act as “a buffer” between her dad and the children.<\/p>\n

“My mom always acted as a buffer between Dad and us girls,\u201d she wrote. \u201cIf he was mad at us, she tried her best to take the brunt of it so that we wouldn\u2019t have to. When he did lash out at us, she defended his action as best she could. \u2018Your dad does it because he loves you and only wants the best for you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She referenced her mother\u2019s actions as great advice for parents to help with their children\u2019s self-esteem.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing my mother did, and I learned later, was she never looked in the mirror and said, \u2018I\u2019m so fat.\u2019 Or \u2018I\u2019m so ugly,\u2019 or \u2018I need to go on a diet,\u2019\u201d Graham said. \u201cProjecting that onto yourself is only going to make your daughter or son think that of themselves, because they\u2019re a product of you. So just saying, \u2018You know what? I look really good today,\u2019 and then just moving on, they\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, maybe I need to say that to myself.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
