The girl\u2019s parents, Marie and James McManus, had expressed reservations about her release from the private Priory clinic, where her treatment was being funded by NHS England, but felt they were \u2018left with no choice\u2019, they told an inquest in Stockport.<\/p>\n
Speaking after a jury ruled the youngster \u2013 known as Pip \u2013 committed suicide, Mrs McManus, 51, broke down in tears. She said: \u2018Pip spent the last three years fighting against anorexia, malnutrition, depression and self-harm. We believe the failings in our daughter\u2019s care from beginning to end resulted in her death.<\/p>\n
\u2018Effective treatment is needed quickly, and if this had been available to our beautiful daughter maybe she would still be alive today. Maybe we would not have needed this inquest.\u2019<\/p>\n
Adv<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n Pip McManus outside Stockport Coroner’s Court, Greater Manchester, following an emotional two-week inquest<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The couple, who have three other children, took Pippa to a doctor around Christmas 2012 when she began \u2018spiralling out of control\u2019, becoming obsessed with having a \u2018fat\u2019 chin, preoccupied with her diet and exercising fanatically, joining running and boxing clubs and surviving on very little food. <\/p>\n She was treated by local mental health services before being detained under the Mental Health Act at the Priory Hospital in Altrincham in September 2014. <\/p>\n The inquest charted how Pippa struggled with her eating disorder, had self-harmed and threatened suicide during her 15-month stay in the specialist unit. <\/p>\n A doctor has described Pip’s case as ‘probably the most severe’ case of anorexia nervosa she has seen, and at one point she weighed just 27kg, while a pencil sharpener blade was also found inside one of her teddy bears.<\/p>\n A doctor described Pip’s case as ‘probably the most severe’ case of anorexia nervosa she has seen, and at one point she weighed just 27kg<\/p>\n Pip died at Gatley railway station in Stockport, Greater Manchester, after a family argument about her excessive gym use, on December 9 2015<\/p>\n Pippa was allowed a home visit in February 2015, but seven goodbye letters to her parents, siblings, friends and even her pet dog were found and she was returned to hospital.<\/p>\n One note described how she wanted to \u2018grow up and have a life, but I don\u2019t have one\u2019. She added: \u2018I cannot fight anorexia any more than I have done. I have tried so very hard, but it has won me.\u2019 <\/p>\n Dr Janet Walsh, a consultant adolescent psychiatrist in charge of the teenager\u2019s treatment, told the inquest there was nothing to make her or her colleagues believe that Pippa was a suicide risk when she was discharged on December 4, 2015, on extended home leave.<\/p>\n The jury agreed that sending her home was appropriate but stressed that the discharge was poorly planned by Trafford Child And Adolescent Mental Health Services. They also said it was not made clear to Pippa\u2019s parents that the risk of suicide was greater in the first few days after her discharge.<\/p>\n Deborah Coles, director of campaign group Inquest which has been supporting the family, said: \u2018Pip\u2019s death has exposed a mental health system which pushed through the discharge of a highly vulnerable child without any of the support or care in place to make sure she would be safe. Her terrified family knew there was huge risk. Their concerns were dismissed and minimised throughout.\u2019<\/p>\n Pip’s mother, Marie McManus, said problems with her weight had first started when she was 12 and her condition later saw her battle ‘anorexia, malnutrition, depression and self-harm’<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Mrs McManus has now set up the Pip Foundation to help the charity Anorexia And Bulimia Care. She said: \u2018Pippa hated herself. She thought she was the ugliest person in the world. Whatever you said, it didn\u2019t make a difference because that\u2019s what the anorexia was telling her.<\/p>\n \u2018We needed mental health workers to work with us but they weren\u2019t there to do that. We were let down by everybody.\u2019<\/p>\n She added: \u2018The tear in the thread of our family will never be mended. We do not want Pip\u2019s life and suffering to have been in vain.<\/p>\n \u2018Whenever she was able she tried to help others with similar conditions. We are planning to continue her good work through the Pip Foundation.<\/p>\n \u2018We especially want to create a dedicated early intervention centre to help young people and their families.\u2019<\/p>\n And, In a JustGiving site to support the Foundation, her mother added: ‘My beautiful daughter Pip took her own life on December 9th 2015 when she was just 15 years old.<\/p>\n ‘The tear in the thread of our family will never be mended.
