Jailed footballer Adam Johnson will mark his first year behind bars on suicide watch.<\/p>\n

The shamed ex England star was locked-up for six years in March last year.<\/p>\n

And as the one year anniversary of his sentencing approaches, prison officers will be making extra checks on his well-being.<\/p>\n

Trusted inmates known as \u201clisteners\u201d on his wing will also engage the former Sunderland winger to make sure coping.<\/p>\n

A source said: \u201cThe first year in prison is always a trying time and a trigger point for lots of emotions, especially for someone facing a long sentence.<\/p>\n

Adam Johnson has spent \u00a31million ALREADY on fight to clear his name after conviction for underage sexual activity with schoolgirl<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, it is a year ticked off but also the beginning of another year stretching off into the distance so hardly a cause for celebration.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a time when some prisoners will seek to do harm to themselves and the officers running his wing will know the date is coming up and look to make extra checks on Johnson to ensure he doesn\u2019t do anything silly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe listeners on the wing will also speak to him and see if they can detect any signs of distress which the officers might not pick up on.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Court of Appeal is currently considering whether to grant his legal team leave to appeal after they contested his conviction on sexual activity with a child and the severity of his sentence.<\/p>\n

Johnson, 29, is being held at HMP Moorland near Doncaster, South Yorks.<\/p>\n

Before his trial at Bradford Crown Court he admitted one count of sexual activity with the 15 year old victim and was jailed on March 24 last year after being convicted of another count of sexual activity with the girl.<\/p>\n\n
