For the record, Drew Barrymore<\/a> appreciates a good zombie pun \u2014 especially in the context of discussing \u201cSanta Clarita Diet<\/a>,\u201d the Netflix comedy created by Victor Fresco<\/a> (\u201cBetter Off Ted\u201d).<\/p>\n

The pun wasn\u2019t intentional on IndieWire\u2019s part; we\u2019d simply asked Fresco how \u201cfleshed out\u201d the mythology for his series during last week\u2019s press day in New York. The series, after all, might be easily described as a zombie show, but those who have seen it know that there\u2019s more to the mystery that transforms Sheila (Barrymore) from the subdued wife and partner of Joel (Timothy Olyphant<\/a>) into a flesh-craving member of the undead.<\/p>\n

As Barrymore grinned at IndieWire\u2019s phrasing, \u201cWe know what the rules are, which is what I like \u2014 there aren\u2019t a lot of rules, and you just stick to them,\u201d Fresco said when we sat down with him, Barrymore and Olyphant. \u201cShe needs to eat human flesh, you know if she bites someone it could spread, in that way, and you kill a zombie by killing its brain. So those are the basic zombie rules, and we\u2019re going to always follow those rules.\u201d<\/p>\n

But beyond that, the show has come up with a few rules of its own, such as the \u201cred ball,\u201d which Sheila regurgitates during her initial (extremely gross) transformation, and appears to be a common trait among her fellow zombies, or fellow members of \u201cthe red ball club,\u201d as Barrymore referred to it.<\/p>\n

What does the red ball mean, though? Fresco wasn\u2019t saying \u2014 because he doesn\u2019t know. That\u2019s according to Timothy Olyphant, anyway. \u201cI know enough to know that he doesn\u2019t know,\u201d he laughed. \u201cI know Victor well enough to know that he has no fucking idea about the red ball.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fresco didn\u2019t seem to mind being called out by Olyphant, though. \u201cA lot of it is unexplained, and it\u2019s why I like being at Netflix, is you don\u2019t have to explain it all, every step,\u201d he said. \u201cI feel like if this were the network version we would have gotten a lot of notes about, \u2018Well, how did it happen? What does that ball represent?\u2019 You know every step they want to know everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Olyphant mused to himself, \u201cDoes everyone have a ball?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t understand the ball, I\u2019m afraid of the ball, and the ball makes me uncomfortable,\u201d Barrymore replied.<\/p>\n

One thing Fresco would confirm: \u201cIt\u2019s not aliens.\u201d Another fact was something all three agreed on \u2014 that there\u2019s a distinction between Sheila\u2019s situation and actual cannibalism.<\/p>\n

\u201cVictor makes a good point, which is cannibals eat by choice, and Sheila has a condition where if she doesn\u2019t eat she won\u2019t survive, so different intentions,\u201d Barrymore said.<\/p>\n

Though as Olyphant noted, \u201cIt\u2019s a fine line. I don\u2019t think that a marriage survives cannibalism. You can\u2019t get behind that! You can\u2019t just be like, \u2018Honey\u2026’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is something they\u2019re faced with as a couple,\u201d Barrymore continued. \u201cIt\u2019s not something they choose.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s a victim,\u201d Olyphant agreed.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s all part of the scenario that is so far unresolved at the end of Season 1, and would be explored further with a Season 2, if\/when Netflix renews it. \u201cHopefully it comes back,\u201d Fresco said. \u201cI think they\u2019re happy with how the show\u2019s performed and so we\u2019ll see. We certainly have ideas. But if you saw the first season and enjoyed it, you know I think there\u2019ll obviously be a similar tone, it\u2019s the same people trying to live this crazy messed up life in the suburbs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Would there be any time jumps between Season 1 and Season 2? \u201cI can\u2019t say for sure cause Tim will say that I don\u2019t know, and he\u2019s right,\u201d Fresco admitted. \u201cBut I don\u2019t think we\u2019re going to jump like two years. Certainly not two years back, that\u2019d be crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Olyphant joked. \u201cFor what it\u2019s worth, I\u2019ll make a confession \u2014 I actually thought we should do that. I was literally thinking this afternoon, I was like \u2018Wouldn\u2019t that be fun?\u2019 I\u2019m just selling real estate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whatever might happen, Barrymore is excited to be doing it on Netflix, where creating a show happens during \u201cthis malleable creative process that is so unlike a studio or network, where people\u2019s intelligence won\u2019t be questioned and file down the edges with so many fucking questions,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s also so different from filmmaking and network shows, cause network shows are trying to last a very long time, and movies are very succinct, they are what they are and then it\u2019s done. This is a whole kind of new concept. I like how people are finding their way with this. It\u2019s super groovy.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said all this while wearing a T-shirt that said \u201czombie\u201d on it. For the record.<\/p>\n
