If you\u2019ve longed for relief from what feels like a never-ending deluge of political commentary, do not look to <\/span>New York Fashion Week <\/span>for comfort in escapism. Unsurprisingly, this year\u2019s event has been the most politically charged fashion week in recent history.<\/p>\n

Everyone from emerging designers to industry stalwarts has participated in their own versions of political activism, featuring slogan T-shirts on runways and providing Planned Parenthood support pins to showgoers. And much of the commentary has come in the form of strong rebukes against President Trump, both directly and indirectly.<\/p>\n

Of course, politics in fashion is nothing new. At the height of the Cold War, the U.S. <\/span>sent Pershing missiles, medium-range missiles that were capable of carrying a nuclear or conventional warhead, to West Germany. The military decision was politically divisive, and activists launched their own antimissile campaigns in protest.<\/p>\n

A few months later, fittingly in 1984, the anti-Pershing movement migrated to England, when designer Katharine Hamnett wore a now-iconic T-shirt to meet former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The shirt\u2019s message: \u201c58% DON\u2019T WANT PERSHING.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of the literal fashion statement, Hamnett <\/span>said, \u201cSlogans work on so many different levels; they\u2019re almost subliminal. They\u2019re also a way of people aligning themselves to a cause. They\u2019re tribal. Wearing one is like branding yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since then, bold political messaging has periodically cropped up in fashion. In 2005, Vivienne Westwood \u2014 one of the most notable activist designers \u2014 sold shirts that read, \u201cI am not a terrorist, please don\u2019t arrest me\u201d to protest anti-terror legislation in the U.K.; 10 years later, Walter Van Beirendonck branded his fall\/winter 2015 collection with the words \u201cstop terrorising our world,\u201d in response to the <\/span>Charlie Hebdo<\/em> <\/span>attacks in Paris. In September, Dior\u2019s Maria Grazia Chiuri designed \u201cWe should all be feminists\u201d white tees.<\/p>\n

At New York Fashion Week, clothing continues to be an outlet for political expression, seemingly without respite from the onslaught of <\/span>all Trump all the time. Designers are leaning heavily into themes of feminism, equality, and patriotism.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s worth mentioning that some of this year\u2019s most politically explicit shows come from international designers: <\/span>Calvin Klein\u2019s Raf Simons <\/span>hails from Belgium; Prabal Gurung was born in Singapore; <\/span>Opening Ceremony\u2019s <\/span>Carol Lim is a first-generation American whose parents are Korean, and her co-founder, Humberto Leon, comes from a Peruvian and Chinese family.<\/p>\n

For all of the political posturing, T-shirts don\u2019t equate to tangible change. Hamnett <\/span>admits <\/span>that people who wear their politics on their sleeve have \u201cthe feeling that they have done something when they haven\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whether the NYFW shows are \u201copportunistic philanthropy\u201d or earnest endeavors towards engagement, we\u2019ve yet to see. Designers may be quick to weigh in, but real change doesn\u2019t happen on a runway alone.<\/p>\n
