The \u201ccash me outside\u201d&nbsp;memes are everywhere, a&nbsp;brief history of the catch phrase (cash phrase?) dominates<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>NYMag.com, and Danielle is back in the news today because of accusations that she&nbsp;punched someone on an airplane.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Gu10IiXVNBk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve never&nbsp;heard of \u201cCash me outside, how bow dah\u201d \u2014 like I\u2019d failed to hear of it until the New York Magazine story \u2014 here\u2019s the basic rundown.<\/p>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>In September, Danielle appeared on one of the countless \u201cout-of-control teen\u201d episodes of \u201cDr. Phil.\u201d She spoke in a weird approximation of what I guess she considers \u201cstreet\u201d dialogue and called the audience \u201chos.\u201d Dr. Phil took the audience\u2019s side, and they applauded, and Danielle threatened to beat them all up, outdoors, because that\u2019s where a proper young gentlelady administers beatings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ctx-link\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCash me outside, how bow dah?\u201d she said, which un-fun people have helpfully translated as \u201ccatch me outside, how \u2019bout that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As an old person, I love these kinds of stories because they feed my Gen X fantasies that my generation will be the&nbsp;last holdout of civilization; that in our final&nbsp;moments we\u2019ll see the world fall to a bunch of violent, inarticulate child-thugs who will destroy all the wonderful things we built with our indie graphic novels and grunge music, and know that we were the last of the best.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1470167200293-0\" data-google-query-id=\"CPXfj9jkgdICFQKWvQod8PIOcA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/30981161\/TheWrapRemnantOOP_0__container__\"><iframe name=\"google_ads_iframe_\/30981161\/TheWrapRemnantOOP_0\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" title=\"3rd party ad content\" id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/30981161\/TheWrapRemnantOOP_0\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Isn\u2019t this what every generation wants? So I read the NY Mag story to the very end.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ctx-link\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Of course for my this-is-the-end-of-the-world narrative to work, I needed Danielle to be not an outlier, but an embodiment of a whole movement of wayward, violent, outside fighter-teens, and for this I needed evidence that she had legions of fans. This sentence in the NY Mag story came close to providing that fix:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeskowitz Bregoli is alive and well and keeping her fans updated via<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>Facebook,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>where just yesterday she streamed a live video consisting largely of her counting dollar bills to the camera for nearly an hour. It has since been viewed over 45,000 times. \u2018CASH ME LIVE!\u2019 Well \u2026 how bow dah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wow! I thought. Did 45,000 people really just watch her count dollar bills for nearly an hour? How many dollar bills? I<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span>started watching, of course. (Make that 45,001, thank you.)<\/p>\n<p>I fast-forwarded after the boring first minutes \u2014 let\u2019s get to the money counting! And then, at about the 17-minute mark, I arrived at a moment I didn\u2019t expect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ctx-link\">\n<p>Danielle was reading a message from another teen, someone who saw Danielle&nbsp;as enough of a role model to write to her and ask for advice. The girl seeking help, who had relocated from Chicago to Texas, said her new classmates \u201cthrow stones at me\u201d because of the way she talks. She asked Danielle what she should do.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle paused, decided how honest she wanted to be, and answered hesitantly:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, obviously I\u2019m tiny so people like to make fun of me. \u2026 That\u2019s why I got a mouth like I do because that\u2019s how I had to\u2026 defend myself or else there wasn\u2019t no defendin\u2019 myself. \u2026 Bitch, I happen to have a mouth. That\u2019s the only way I\u2019m finna get through with life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Did you get that?&nbsp;Let me try to translate.&nbsp;She\u2019s little, and feels physically threatened by other kids, so she makes a lot of threats to get them&nbsp;to leave her alone. She doesn\u2019t actually<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em>want<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/em>to fight entire audiences, outside. She wants to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><em>not<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/em>fight entire audiences. Anywhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ctx-link\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the moment I heard her answer, my whole self-serving end-of-the-world scenario was ruined. Danielle is just doing what people have always done: trying not to get hurt. She turns out to be a real, flesh-and-blood human who, while hilarious, also has some dimensionality.<\/p>\n<p>She isn\u2019t, to my disappointment, a child-monster, and, against my every hope, I empathize with her. I know, I know: I hate it when this happens, too.<\/p>\n<p>You know what I\u2019m going to say now, right?
