EYES: Three coats of CoverGirl NatureLuxe Mousse Mascara ($7; drugstore.com) plump lashes without leaving them clumpy. LIPS: CoverGirl LipPerfection in Hot with ShineBlast in Aglow ($6 and $7; drugstore.com) leaves lips moist, shiny, and fully coated in deep crimson. FINISHING TOUCH: Red lipstick will bring out any other inflammation in your face-blemishes, veins and capillaries included. Create a smooth, even canvas by sweeping on a liquid formula like NatureLuxe Silk Foundation ($10; drugstore.com) with a synthetic brush.

DARK NEUTRALS

If you’re wearing a metallic dress like Kerry Washington, why not highlight your face and eyes with similar moody tones? (That’s exactly what her makeup artist Sam Fine did here!) A warm, bronzey canvas was his starting point: “I always choose bronzer one shade deeper than the complexion to add dimension. I love to contour the forehead, cheeks and sides of the nose.”

EYES: Fine blended a brown gold shadow like L’Oreal Studio Secrets Professional in Autumn Leaves ($8; drugstore.com) along the entire lid and smudged a bit below the lower lashline, too. He added fake lashes, a few coats of mascara, and finished by rimming the entire eye in black kohl pencil. LIPS: “I didn’t want to distract from the smoky eye, so I went with nude lips and a dab of gloss,” Fine told us. FINISHING TOUCH: When the eyes are the focus, undereye concealer is key. Fine used Fashion Fair Cosmetics Concealer in Cashew ($17; fashionfair.com), dabbing it close the lashline and fanning it outwards to the center of the face.

You don’t need pounds of makeup to make a statement. In fact, pastels are a fresh, unexpected choice during winter months. Makeup artist Melanie Inglessis, who created this look for Olivia Wilde, says she went for “soft glowing skin and amazing eyelashes.”

EYES: Inglessis used a Korean brand of false lashes on Wilde, but Make Up For Ever’s False Lashes in Didi ($15; sephora.com) will work too. “I never use a full strip,” she says. “Cut them into three or four pieces-they’re easier to apply and more flexible to wear.” CHEEKS: Laura Mercier Stain Spot in Peach Glaze ($20; lauramercier.com) is one of Inglessis’s favorite products. She smoothed a bit along Wilde’s cheekbones. “It is the perfect peachy color,” she says. FINISHING TOUCH: The makeup artist added a neutral coat of NARS Lipgloss in Striptease ($24; narscosmetics.com) for a little shine.

DRAMATIC PINK

Red lips are are the obvious choice with LDB’s. Makeup artist Hugh Vanngo added an element of surprise by giving Camilla Belle a striking pink lip. “Camilla is always open to play with makeup,” he says.

EYES: Vanngo lined Belle’s eyes in navy liner, then pressed Chanel Illusion D’Ombre eye shadow in Emerveille ($36; chanel.com) on the lower lashline. Black mascara on the top lashes only kept the eyes striking but not heavy. LIPS: “The lip color is Tom Ford’s Violet Fatale ($48; neimanmarcus.com). It’s a pinkish violet shade but Camilla’s lips are very pink already, which accentuates the tone,” he says. FINISHING TOUCH: Highlighter along the cheekbones, nose and forehead gave the severe colors a touch of light.

“I wanted Carey to really stand out,” her makeup artist Georgie Eisdell told us. “I wanted it to be all eyes, eyebrows and perfect skin-but minimal color.” A wash of lightweight foundation and a dusting of translucent powder perfected Mulligan’s complexion.

EYES: Eisdell blended two shades of cream eye shadows along Mulligan’s lids: Chanel Illusion D’Ombre in Mirifique, a sparkly slate, and Fantasme, an icy white ($36 each; chanel.com). A few generous coats of YSL Faux Cils mascara ($30; yslbeautyus.com) finished lashes. BROWS: “I sharpened Carey’s eyebrows with The Make Up Store Tri Brow Color ($27; makeupstore.se), extending the shape a bit to add drama,” Eisdell tells us. FINISHING TOUCH: A sweep of Dior Bois De Rosebud ($42; sephora.com) kept Mulligan from looking too cold.
