Couture is no joke. For a fashion brand to be considered an official haute couture house, they must have an in-house atelier — staffed by a minimum of 15 fulltime workers — where clothes are custom-fitted to private clients, “and then realized by a team of 20 or more who use recognized savoir-faire techniques,” according to an article on Vogue’s UK site. Then, twice a year (in January and July) they must show a collection of at least 35 designs that includes both day and evening wear. And no, I’m not making any of this up. But something about the beauty looks we saw during the spring 2019 couture shows felt even more luxurious and extravagant than usual, featuring a level of fantasy, intricacy, and craftsmanship that rivaled the one-of-kind clothes they were made to complement. Blunt bangs dip-dyed in glitter; living, breathing flowers trickling across models’ hair and foreheads; razor-sharp cat eyes and sky-high bouffants — these are just a few of the magical hair and makeup moments spotted throughout this couture season.
